PITA. report a downed cable to Verizon

Not being a VZ customer, I had to call them to report a landline hanging
very low over an alley.
Layers over layers of voice prompts to finally get to a human, a nice lady
who spoke with an Indian accent.
After 10 minutes of questioning, the report was made.

This is the second time I've made one of these reports. Last time, no one
ever showed to rectify the issue.
Got my sidecutters standing by, again smiley-rpg028

It sucks, with every cable/telco. Local offices don't even have numbers you can reach any more to report a physical outage, you have to go through the clueless offshore customer-no-service.

Yeah, Verizon's automated reporting line is a big pain. I went through it a few years ago, a branch came down in a storm and took the line from he street to my house with it. Took forever to get to the point where an actual person could be talked to, kept getting hung at the point where the automated system was set to test the line.

I talked with the repairman when he came out, that testing function hasn't worked with the phone equipment in town for years, and Verizon management had no plans to repair or replace it. But they also couldn't be bothered to customize the automated response to skip that line test for numbers connected to the equipment in this town, or apparently from what he said any other town with the same lack of working line testing.

Maybe it would be better to just call the local police on something like this.

Then they can deal with reporting the situation to the utility.

They'll tell you it's not their problem, and give you the utilities number - unless it's an electrical line, then they do the right thing and stuff happens in a hurry.

Had issues with a total FiOS outage last winter. I was told that earliest appointment was three days out. Tech showed up for a call on the house diagonally behind me the next day. Turns out that the box on the pole had been eaten by squirrels and was full of ice. Asked the Tech how come CS didn't put together the number of reported outages associated with the branchlike. He rolled is eyes and went on to fix it. He suggested that I keep my service appointment on the off chance that the issue reoccurred.

We really should push to bury as much of our electrical and communication infrastructure to minimize the risk of damage.

Our current house is in a neighborhood with all in-ground utilities. I think our power has gone out twice in the 8 years we've lived here, and never for more than a few minutes. Ditto the telco fiber connection.

Crapcast went out at least once a month, so I fired them.

We have underground utilities & the power goes out pretty often. (once every 2-3 months).

Remember that the power is supplied aboveground at some point, and is still vulnerable to trees/crashes/etc.

Remember that the power is supplied aboveground at some point, and is still vulnerable to trees/crashes/etc.

However, it minimizes the amount of cable that's exposed to falling trees, debris, vehicle impact, etc. Plus it would reduce how much tree trimming needs to be completed each year to reduce the risk of wires being taken down.

Outages may not be the result of fallen wires. Our electrical infrastructure in many parts of the country is as old or older than the majority of our population.
