PSA: 10 Digit Dialing changes are happening
Posted by: GGD

There are 82 area codes in the US that are currently transitioning to 10 digit dialing (really 11 digit), need to dial 1+area code to dial all numbers, even if in the same area code. This hit our phones this morning, we started getting the "cannot be reached as dialed" phone company message for 7 digit phone numbers.

This is all part of a change to make dialing "988" reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline from any phone.

Here's the list of the 82 area code impacted

Upcoming Transitions to Ten-Digit Dialing: Where and When?

There are 82 area codes in 35 states and one U.S. territory that currently use "988" as their local exchange and allow seven-digit dialing. A local exchange, also known as a central office code, is the first three numbers of a seven-digit telephone number. To prepare for implementation of a quick way to dial the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline – using only "988" to connect callers to the Lifeline – these area codes must transition to ten-digit dialing for all calls, including local calls.

The North American Numbering Plan Administrator has a list of the states and area codes that will be affected. You can check the list to find out if your area code is one that will be transitioning: [nationalnanpa.com]

If you have one of these area codes, beginning on October 24, 2021, you must dial ten digits (area code + telephone number) for all local calls. On and after this date, local calls dialed with only seven digits may not connect, and a recording will inform you that your call cannot be completed as dialed. You must hang up and dial again using the area code and the seven-digit number.

Ten-digit dialing for local calls has been enabled in these area codes since April 24, 2021, and you can begin dialing ten digits anytime, though seven-digit local calls will still be completed prior to October 24, 2021.

I haven't used a 7-digit number for years, even if I'm calling the guy next door.

This is the list of area codes that had still allowed 7 digit dialing up until this recent change (and had valid local numbers starting with 988). Lots of other area codes went to 10 digit dialing for other reasons at various times in the past.

I still remember using a phone that only needed 4 digit dialing in the 1960s.

I got notice from my carrier last week.

I can deal with it, but I'm glad I don't live in a layered area code city (one city, two area codes covering the same geographic area).

I seriously thought it was like that everywhere, and had been since the turn of the century... I guess that's because I've been in Atlanta for 20 years. 10 digit dialing started about the time I moved here.

Had it here for what, 15 years? Second nature now. I do have to remember to add the 1 when calling outside the immediate two area codes. Cell phones have area codes from all over the place these days, anyway. You could be calling your next door neighbor's phone that has an area code from 2000 miles away. It's a whole new world, baby.

I'm with Will, my first impression was that I've been doing that for decades on both coasts.

'Thought the whole country went 10-digit in the 1980s, but when I Googled it I found that it was just New York City and Long Island, Los Angeles and Chicago.

...So, just the important parts of the country. angel smiley

...And urban areas have been slowly adopting 10-digit dialing since then via overlay plans.

I didn't realize there were places where 7 digit still worked. We switched to 10 digit roughly 25 years ago.

Fortunately, I don't think anyone memorizes phone numbers anymore so it's not that big of a deal.

That would only be if you're using a landline. No need to "dial" the 1 from a cell phone.

I HAVE a phone with four digits on the dial plate. From my parent's phone from when they moved to Wisconsin in 1963. I was using the phone up until a couple of months ago when I cancelled our ATT landline which was costing way too much to receive solicitation calls.

It's been at least 30 years since I dialed a seven digit # and this
was not in "...just the important parts of the country."
This seems appropriate, posted earlier by Lux Interior...

I didn't realize there were places where 7 digit still worked.

I was a little miffed when SF and other areas got to keep 415, and we got 510.

When we had to go to 10 digits for just about anywhere, I didn't care.

I think the 1+ for landlines came a little later, and I didn't care.

But then when I realized I didn't need it with a cellphone, I was happy.

Yeah, like some some "distressed soul "is going to REMEMBER to dial whatever number they come up with.

I expect that for whatever number of people that may be helped, will be more than offset by the HUNDREDS of MILLIONS of people who will now have to remember to dial the extra digits. Just think of how much fun it will be to REPROGRAM all the devices people have. If you think we have problems with "unstable" people now, wait until they get really frustrated!

I don't think anyone is using "999". Why didn't they just agree to use that? angry villagers smiley

I just ran a quick check. Here's what turned up:

"Area Code 999 is designated as an Expansion Code which is reserved for future use if it becomes necessary to expand the current ten digit format. If you receive a phone call from area code 999 it is a spam call. Any phone number such as 999-xxx-xxx does not exist".

10 digit dialing is so last century for many of us. I did get a kick out of our early cell phone dialing, wherein landline dialing had gone to 10 digits years before, the cell's 7 digit dialing remained viable for a few more years. The joke was on me when cell went to 10 digits, and I had to update all my contacts. Welcome to the 1990's.

AFAIK, it's 10 digits, not 11.

Is there any area where they converted 7 to 10 that requires you to dial 1+ the number?
