Ok, so I know a lot of you would rathe be red than have AMZonians peeking in and listening to all y'all snore.

But it does have a manual shutter to block the camera, if'n you're of a mind.

This is the Gen 1 version, which lacks the 2MP camera and Smart Display (no clue) of the L&G ($85), and is now only available in Sandstone.

I have one on my nightstand and just ordered another for the living room.

I've watched video on it and it's fine, but obviously not my first choice, though more convenient than my iPad.

But what I really like is answers to Dear Alexa are often displayed on the screen, unlike most of Siri's responses.

Keeping a pen handy, I can jot down the information, rather than rely on the little gray cells that all to frequently are leaping into some cranial chasm, never to be heard of again.

But I digress.

If one has ever considered dipping into the Bezo's Overlord world, this is a good entry point — $45, tax, free shipping, and 10% back on an AMZ card.

Those who will undoubtable hasten to reply 'Never will I ever...' I feel ya and am ok with that.

I have one of these new in the box from a Prime Day promotion last year—or was it the year before that? So it's worth hooking up?

That's relative, but I use mine all the time.

Mainly, I set timers, check the weather, do unit conversions, query Alexa about things for which I might normally use Safari, spell a word for me, control lights and smart switches (at about 80% reliably) and occasionally, play and Audible book or a podcast.

Regarding timers, you can set multiple timers and name them, in the Echoverse.

There is far more potential, but I've never really plumbed the depths of the Echo garden.

Alexa can answer far more questions than Siri, and having some answers displayed as well as stated can be a big plus.

I've done much of the above on cold, late nights or early mornings while barely poking my head above the covers.

One thing I've only done once is set an alarm with Alexa.

The alarm volume is very loud compared to the listening volume, which I keep low.

It may be adjustable, and one day I'll look into it, but my Watch addresses my rare alarm needs very well.

We use ours in our master bath but with camera blocked. Works well.

I have one in the bedroom, camera blocked that replaced a Echo Dot with clock as a alarm clock (Dot Clock moved to Bathroom for music in the shower).

Don't use it as much as I should - tempted to grab another to to replace a Echo dot downstairs but may pass - that $45 may have to go towards a winter heating bill - lol

I guess I'll give it a shot (apparently, I claimed I would do this a few months ago when someone else posted about the Echo Show 5). My hesitation is that I can only see it being useful in the kitchen where we already have an Echo device that surely sounds better. But we hardly use that one for music anyway, so why not.

We like the clock feature. Sound is fine for listening to news etc.

YEs, we have an Echo 5 in the master bathroom, as the CLOCK is great. Took out the Radio, and now the Echo 5 has clock, and you tell it to Play NPR, and your all set.
