Twice a year.
We have a lifetime parts and labor warranty on the new unit, if we do the twice a year service, but we have done the twice a year thing for a long time.

What is this furnace thing of which you speak?

I run A/C probably 8-9 months out of the year. I probably only turn on heat for a month or two each year.

When it breaks. We are going on year 5 though and I think I am going to get the coils cleaned before next summer.

Just had our 16 year old furnace checked out of an abundance of caution. Passed all specs including combustion efficiency.

But I do change the air filter and do basic maintenance.

My visiting technician said that the unit we have is really not serviceable. Basically if it were to fail now, they would replace it and not fix unless it's super simple.

There's big differences between gas, oil and electric/heat pump heat as far as service intervals.

Our primary is a 13 SEER heat pump with an oil furnace for emergency heat instead of electric heat strips. I set the thermostat parameters as to where I want the heat pump to turn off and the oil furnace to take over. Thermostat can control up to three types of heat and has a outside temperature probe. Our Williamson Oil-Saver furnace hasn't been serviced in years, maybe since my Dad passed away, he was one of the best HVAC guys ever.

Looks like we'll start burning some wood in our EPA approved insert next week, turning much colder. Maybe snow in the NC mountains next weekend they're saying and a freeze here.

My neighbors had an identical unit and furnace. For at least 6-8 years, they had theirs serviced once or twice a year (I forget) as part of some plan from a company that would then give them a big discount on a new model when the old one died.

I had mine serviced ~4 years ago, when it was about 25 years old. So far mine has lasted about five years longer than the neighbor's.

They probably had crappy service techs.

When we moved into our home in 1995 my Dad was retired but still had his gas license and knew loads about oil furnaces. He was a Williamson and Thermo-Pride furnace dealer for about 30 years. He took one look at our furnace and immediately said I can see why they were having problems. The flue pipe to the flue had 3 or 4 elbows in it. He immediately went to work and got it down to just 2 elbows. Then he pulled the high retention oil burner, he called it, the ignition electrodes were way off and the nozzle was the wrong size. He sure straightened it out, knock on wood. Luckily our closest neighbor up the road is a one man operation doing HVAC and he's great about coming right over if we or my son needs him. I sure miss Dad when I need I have problems with stuff like this.

No option for 50+ year old furnace that has been been red-tagged by the gas company, and is therefore inoperable?

We have a few different sizes of heating pads, just in case we need some added warmth.

Woulda claimed the Mac Pro space heater thing, but they need some work, and are way down on the other human's "honey-do" list....

I may never finish her never-ending list, so who knows when the "Twin Towers" will get attended to; but it will be before the furnace get looked at again.

Me too. My dad could fix almost anything and knew where I could get the best price on anything he couldn’t.

Our forced air unit is 60 years old. No HVAC technician will touch it but I have the gas company guy come out every spring (when I remember) to give it a safety check. A couple times I told him I was going to replace a part and he'd come back when it was done to give it the all clear.
