Do bidets really work?
Posted by: anonymouse1
Date: November 04, 2021 04:14PM
Thinking about getting a bidet, but I have to admit to a healthy degree of skepticism about whether they really work, or whether they leave, umm, a residue.

I find the concept appealing, but I'm uncertain about how effective they really are.

Anybody here have any experience they're willing to report on?

Thanks!

The first time I saw one was when I was in Paris in the mid 80's in the small hotel I was staying in.

I washed my clothes in it. It worked quite well.

My bidet attachment works very well.

I won't say it gets "everything"... but, it leaves behind a lot less than smearing things around with TP does.

First you rinse, then with a far smaller portion of TP than you'd normally use, you dry off. A package of 24 rolls has lasted me going on 18 months now, and I've still got 6-8 rolls to go.

I won't ever own a house again without installing a bidet-attachment. This is something Europe and Asia (at least the parts I've visited) really get RIGHT!

Yes they work.

Let's say you get mud on your shoes. Do you get them cleaner with a dry paper towel, or a hose?

My advice is, spend the money and get a nice bidet. My BioBidet has a heated seat, heated water, heated air dryer, and can be aimed. It came with the house, but I'd buy it again.

I've had my $38 Luxe Bidet Neo 120 for a couple of years now. If it broke today, I'd order another right away.

From another thread on the same topic:

I just don't get how it saves TP. My mom was the type who would clean the house before the cleaning lady came. Genetically I think I'd be applying the same principal to this, umm, situation. Thus it seems more time consuming.

1. Business
2. Bidet
3. Quick dab of affected area with small amount of toilet paper, a couple of sheets tops versus regular amount, to dry
4. Proofread TP used in dabbing for errors; If clean, you're done.

Classic bidets that are like low slung sinks with faucets such as those they used to have in old french hotels do not work very well.

Washlets/toilet bidet attachments that spray upwards such as those described above work vastly better than (i.e. cleaner), and are more pleasant than, using toilet paper. We started with a Luxe bidet and then graduated to a Toto with heated water. I find that using toilet paper has become moderately unpleasant after having become used to the luxury of using a bidet. Once you've tried it there's no going back.

Also, the Luxe bidet attachments are very inexpensive and will pay for themselves in reduced TP costs in a very short period of time. The Toto Washlets are much more expensive and require an electrical outlet next to the toilet, but are a true luxury product.

IF I were to install a Toto washlet - should I put it in the bathroom near the kitchen where its a bit more public or should it go in the bathroom off the master bedroom? Whats the etiquette on this?

Put in in the restroom you use the most. Don't worry about guests, most won't use it out of ignorance.

Yes. Put me in the Luxe bidet convert category ... based on the advice of those here, I got a Neo 180, and it's been great. Support from the company has been great, too ... one of them developed a problem where the nozzle wouldn't retract, and the company replaced it right away.

Does a shower get everything?

Then a bidet, when properly used, will get everything.

(lived overseas in the 80s, came back and have had a bidet installed in every home I've owned ever since).

Once you use one (again, first learning how to use one), it's quite odd to not have one.

The answer is YES. And they get everything. Less TP wasted.
I have a simple one, hooked up to the toilet’s cold water line. It’s a shock every time. I’m seriously considering one with heated water. LOL

A two second spritz? Sure, you likely will have residue. A 15 second full pressure spray? With some models, you might not have any skin left.

You'd think so, but no. If you're hairy, toilet paper creates as much of a problem as it solves, especially the "super soft" varieties. With a good stream of water on the job, all your problems just rinse right away. Drying may take a little more effort than for the follicularly-challenged, but that's the same as with any part of your body.

What Paul F said. I installed a bidet attachment in our winter place. It works well enough that I installed 2 more in our primary home. All 3 are cold water only, and there is no discomfort as the water is not that cold. As others point out, there is a significant savings on toilet paper, which is what made me decide to try them in the first place.

This is my worry. I finally had the opportunity to try one at a friends house in the SoCal desert and it worked great. But in the winter time, our tap water can come out at about 40-50 degrees, which might not be that pleasant. Getting hot water plumbed to the loo room wouldn't necessarily help as it sometimes takes 30 seconds for hot water to reach the upstairs.

I guess I just need to "give it a go" and see how it works out in our colder environs.

If I open my bidet valve "full bore", it'll strip the paint right off my nethers... Half way is more than enough to remove all traces of Klingons.

And regarding the water temp; I thought that was going to be an issue, but, turns out that after a little while in my water pipes in the house, it takes enough chill off the water that it's not uncomfortable unless I leave it run a long while and the "cold stuff" from further out.

When I renovate the kitchen, I'm going to have an outlet put in the bathroom (other side of one of the kitchen walls) so I can upgrade to one of the nicer heated models with a joystick for aiming, and a "massage mode"... :-)

Most of the heated water bidets heat the water and don't tap into a hot water line. Just one of the reasons for needing to be plugged in.

Yep. Mine heats the water and tees into the same water supply as the tank.

Depends which model. We have the C200 which retails for about $430. They are often available on sale so I would not suggest paying retail.

In the depths of winter our water is right at freezing. Sometimes the city asks us to trickle water in one tap to keep the mains open as our line from the street is under an insulating blanket of snow, not buried eight feet under bare pavement. They will even give us a break on water charges when the city makes the request. You get used to the cold water knowing it’s harmless. Now if it starts blasting slush, well, that’s another kettle of fish.

Thats the same as the c200 except that it omits the extraction fan/deodorizer (we don't use that feature because its annoyingly loud) and the bowl premist feature (which helps keep the bowl a little cleaner). That said, I think we bought our C200 on sale for about $320.

Can recommend Brondell; not cheap, but worth the cost.

If you want/need warm water, you would need a close electrical outlet (or be willing to live with an extension cord next to your toilet).

MUCH MUCH cleaner than toilet paper. And much easier on the nether regions. I will never go back to manually wiping... And the toilet will never get clogged.
