Honestly, Captain America: Winter Soldier was a pretty good entry in the genre.

I still find myself recommending No Way Out. Costner. Hackman. And Sean Young in her prime.

Yep, that was back when Hackman was literally in every movie that came out for a couple of decades running. Costner's American Flyers, from a couple of years earlier, has some suspenseful moments in it for a sports movie.

'The Americans' on Amazon Prime. It's a series rather than a film, but falls into what you desire.

A pair of deep-cover Soviet spies masquerades as a typical DC couple whose children, neighbors, coworkers & friends are completely unaware of their activities. At home, they're the stereotypical parents of stereotypical kids; at work, they pose as travel agents; but at night, they weave a web of confidants, lovers, dupes, and historical figures from the Reagan-era Cold War.

tried the Americans. Gave up half a season in. I forget why.
The Ipcress File. That may need a re-watch.

not that one has anything to do with the other.
Copenhagen on Prime is a film version of a play by Michael Frayn.
It's about the meeting between physicists Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg in 1941 Copenhagen.
It's interesting, science and history wise and well done.
It has an interesting twist on the history of bomb development at the time.

The Spy Who Came In From The Cold, with Richard Burton.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

I’d put either up with the Bourne films.

The Americans, like many dramatic series, id very slow moving. I mean that literally. I usually watch using VLC media player, and set playback at 8% faster. Many shows end up far more watchable.

As series go, I’d definitely suggest giving The Americans another try. I rank among the best series ever. Right up there with The Wire, Sopranos, Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.

Spy movies and movies with spies
Movies
  • Man on Fire
  • Mission Impossible series
  • The Bourne series
  • I’m hearing great things about “Nobody”, Bob Odenkirk
  • Spy Game (Redford)
  • Three Days of the Condor
  • The Falcon and the Snowman
  • The Kingsman (Another humorous take)

Series
  • The Americans
  • Berlin Station
  • Rubicon (A ‘hidden gem’)
  • Sidney Riley: Ace of Spies (Near the top of my GOAT list)
  • MI5 (aka “Spooks”) Has one of the most heartbreaking scenes I’ve watched in any medium.’
  • The Sandbaggers (A classic)

Definitely agree on the first two, wouldn’t argue the third. I can see what you’re saying, but I have slightly above mid tier tolerance level for soap opera in my shows.

“Pine Gap” might be another one to give a whirl. About the crew at a remote NSA listening station. You can kind of see “Rubicon” in its bones, and a swig of “Occupied”. Some soap, but it’s rolled fairly neatly into the intrigue.

Kingsman was a lot of fun and Rubicon was brilliant.

I'm not sure Man on Fire doesn't go a little far afield of the original request but it was a terrific movie, one of my favorites, and one of my favorite Denzel Washington movies.

And slightly far afield, I just watched a PBS documentary, American Experience: The Codebreaker (AMZ).

This is truly fascinating and quite sad as well, but certainly worth the viewing.

but Oskar Werner really stands out in the film, as much as Burton was excellent.

I’ve learned to leaven the disappointment of cancellations by adopting a view of the shows as snatches of a really juicy conversation overheard on a bus or train. Unresolved, but still worth the hearing.. big grin smiley

“Man on Fire” I included under the loosey goosiness of ‘former spy’. An epilogue of sorts to one spook’s story. ;)
