another plumb question - better seal needed

[flic.kr]

a mix valve that is used to fill turtle tanks.
I replaced a ball valve today that's down the line.
The chrome bolt on the bottom of the mix valve has a tiny bit of leak.
It's in good shape and I wrapped with teflon a few rounds.
But there is still a tiny bit of moisture getting thru.
What else should I use to seal?

Taco brand? Hmm, more lettuce?

If the water is getting out through the tape I would just go back and do some more tape, you could even try the thicker yellow gas line tape.

But not fur seals, they are too full of themselves, cavorting about at all the high society functions......

The chrome bolt on the bottom of the mix valve...
If I understand correctly, you're talking about the compression nut as
shown in your pix.
Unscrew the nut & check for any cracks or chipped threads, do the same
on the valve body. If it's OK, clean both sets of threads & put 6 wraps of
teflon tape on the valve threads.

Everyone some day, if they play Mario long enough will learn that tape is to make removal easier as much as it is to make the seal.

that is essentially a type of Union...or a compression / flare /rubber gasket connection..same idea basically..that nut slams the faces together and forms a seal..might be rubber in this..might be metal to metal.
It's not supposed to have any Tef tape or pipe dope on it..the seal occurs at the face of these joints

If the connection is leaking at the face where it meets the other half of the Union..it will eventually continue to leak no matter what junk you put onthose threads

Drain the system and open up the connection.. whatever is down the line should allow you to separate these two parts in some way..inspect

take a look at the surface of the two joining faces, or the rubber ..if there is damage to them they will be leaking from that issue..it could be that they aren't squared up with each other enough to seal..
could be mineral deposits or 'crap' depending on your water source..clean the faces, replace the rubber..et al.. line them up, you seal unions by tightening them..tighten it best you can if they are -metal to metal---if it's rubber or whatever in there, you tighten until it's sealed..overtightening rubber can cause leaks..
these are a common source of leaks due to this range of issues..with both gas and water..

yea, that rubber washer could be pretty shot. IT's about 15-year-old and did look a little phunky. I'll change that and see what comes ... or hopefully not.

Bet it'll be hard to find like a single O ring unless I buy a pack of 50.
I hate Homies and Lowes for putting m&p's out of business.
The closest stocked hardware store is now 10 miles from here.
We use to have 3 or 4.

Homies and Lowes won't carry replacement parts that cut into their main
business; selling new valves. It's why I like Moen for fixtures, need a new
part just call Moen and they send it to you for free.

where do you keep these turtle tanks? what are you mixing with this "mix valve"? if this is outside, does it even mater if there is small leak?

I think Kraniac got it right, it is probably the wrong approach to put tape or dope in those threads, the parts that are supposed to make a seal are inside, and that nut is there to keep them compressed, not to make a seal.

but for future reference, when you have to use teflon tape, the direction on how you wrap the tape in the threads is important. Go in the same direction as when you tighten the nut, otherwise you undo the tape when you tighten the nut and it won't work.

inside. too cold in these parts for outside turtles.
hot and cold water to 96º. Taco mix valve.
a new rubber washer and some PTFE as well.
Been fine for 24 hrs. I think I'm good.

Onto the next plumbing issue.
The dreaded sacrificial anode for the Heat-Flo dhw tank.
Can't wait. Had to buy a 1 3/4" x 3/4" drive socket.

Thing that pisses me off about this stuff (rant) - I know there are US made fittings, but no local supply has them.
So far can't find an interwebber that has US neither.
The best I can get that is not jina, is Everbuilt, Homies brand, from Italy.

"Go in the same direction as when you tighten the nut, otherwise you undo the tape when you tighten the nut and it won't work. "
Next you'll be telling me to go get vac'd!

Yep. We have 5 bathroom faucets that are all the same. When a stem started to leak I called Delta and asked them to send a replacement and an extra since they were all the same and if 1 was leaking then others would surely be soon following. The nice lady said sure and then sent 4 stems. I've used a second one and the others are just waiting. When I use the third one I'll call again and get some more. It's easier and certainly cheaper than buying the same thing at Home Depot or Lowe's.
