Spring ahead, fall back.

Except for Arizona (minus Navajo Nation) and Hawaii which don't observe DLS.

"Daily Savings Time"

Dear Click and Clack,

The clocks would be set forward by an hour every afternoon at 3:30 p.m., immediately making it 4:30 and almost time to quit work. Every business would immediately save an hour's worth of energy costs every day, a roughly 12% savings. Workers' morale would immediately improve and productivity would soar, since not much gets done after 3:30, anyway.

But wait! There's more. The second part of my plan is to move the clock back an hour every morning at 4:30 a.m., immediately making it 3:30 a.m. This would allow nearly everyone to get an extra hour of sleep every night. Since studies show that the typical American is sleep deprived, this would have immediate health benefits. People would awaken every morning well rested, and in a good mood — even teenagers!

I think that you guys have the technical background to truly appreciate what great savings are available with this straightforward concept. With your support, we can make this happen!

These are just a few of the benefits of Daily Savings Time. Granted, there would be some minor inconveniences, especially for those who work at night. However, the overall benefits far outweigh these minor inconveniences.

In closing, I quote Ben Franklin: "For the great benefit of this discovery, thus freely communicated and bestowed by me on the public, I demand neither place, pension, exclusive privilege, nor any other reward whatever. I expect only to have the honor of it."

I saw a Canadian news report cited a study (Simon Fraser University mentioned but I couldn't find the related paper) that showed during the late Fall and early Winter, maintaining the earlier sunrise of Standard Time resulted in a decrease of depression but year round Savings Time resulted in an increase of depression. The study said lack of light in the morning makes it hard to wake up and lead to later waking and later bedtimes. I think this relates well to the Seattle school system study of delaying start of instruction so that the sun was up improved... attendance and performance.

While a small vocal population likes light in the evening to shop/exercise, I think the historic norm of "Noon" having the sun directly overhead is the way to go. edit for gramma

When was the last time you PHYSICALLY set a clock back?!?

Besides in Texas, I think we need Reverse DST for the summer, so the sun goes down earlier, evenings cool earlier. People sleep thru the (less hot) cool early mornings!

Yeah, I think the argument that more light in the evening saves energy is long past its prime. This was based on lighting, but that's not what uses power today. It's AC, monster refrigerators, wall sized television sets, etc. One less hour of light in the evening means I'm running the AC for one less hour per day.

Don't care, I like it.

I really like the darker mornings and brighter afternoons, and could live with that all year round.

No clocks to change, no watches to reset.

As it is now, I have no clocks to change, and only a few watches to reset.

When I'm retired, it wouldn't matter to me, I could do yard work anytime.
DST allows me the option to go in the yard after work, have a later dinner, or reverse that and get stuff done after dinner.

In deepest winter, both mornings and evenings are dark, so much so that an extra hour or whatever on either end never actually materializes the way people assume.

Farmers advocated for this decades ago, when we were still somewhat agrarian. That’s it, everything.

Around here that hour in the morning is when school kids are first getting out onto the streets to either walk or get the bus. With the clock shifted from DST that would be dark until around 8:30 AM or later, as it is the earliest students, usually high schoolers, are walking in the predawn light. It definitely gets the grade schoolers out after the sun is up.

As for farmers advocating for DST, that is not something I have ever seen listed as a reason for going to DST. In fact just the opposite. Farmers get up when the sun is up or when morning chores need to be done, not by whatever the clock says. Most advocacy has been from commerce and manufacturing or for energy saving reasons.

I agree with that, but I like waking up to 'dark' mornings.

Sometimes, when the day is gray, it's just a great feeling staying inside, reading a book, and drinking hot chocolate.

It's not the same when it's bright and sunny out; I'm sometimes a little bored with that.

Sometimes, I'm only happy when it rains.

I worked a 20 hour day yesterday as a volunteer at my daughter's marching band competition.

I can't believe not one person mentioned "At least we get an extra hour tonight!"

I remember looking at the clock and seeing that it was 1 AM when I went to bed. I just thought, "Strange, I thought I got home at 1 AM."

I was very tired and just had a bourbon to relax after the hectic day.
