Around a week or so ago - somebody posted about the Echo Show 5 on sale for $45

My response was: I have one in the bedroom, camera blocked that replaced a Echo Dot with clock as a alarm clock (Dot Clock moved to Bathroom for music in the shower).

Don't use it as much as I should - tempted to grab another to to replace a Echo dot downstairs but may pass - that $45 may have to go towards a winter heating bill - lol

Now Amazon again has the Gen 1 Echo Show 8 on sale for $59.99 (regular $109.99)

But now they ALSO have the Amazon Trade In Program where you can get a instant rebate for a old Amazon Device AND ALSO UNLOCK A 25% DISCOUNT on the Echo Show 8

If my math is right, I can trade in my Echo Dot 3 for a $5 credit and unlock the 25% discount ($15) bringing the total to $40 with free shipping....

I was just at Target tonight and they had a cute display with 4 Echo devices. The Echo 8 is SO MUCH bigger and nicer than a Echo 5, sound was also clearer on the 8 and text on the demos were easier on my old eyes on the Echo 8

The Echo 8 (with camera blocked) would make a much bigger & nicer, bedside alarm clock. The Echo Dot with Clock would still live in the bathroom for music near the shower. The Echo 5 would replace the Dot 3 on a desk OR maybe on a mantle as a digital clock or mini digital picture frame?

Echo 8 is so much bigger and nicer....

What would you do?

You can go thru the upgrade-order process up until actually clicking the BUY button to 'check your work'.

I'd recommend that and see if you get the same answer.

I'm detecting a theme here.

Personally, the 5 is just right for my nightstand and morning vision.

But I can see (lol) how the extra large digits could be a really good thing.

I don't use my 5 for music as I'm not crazy about echo devices' heavy bass content.

You seem pleased with it and that's what counts.

Video on the 5 is decent so the 8 would be great to watch some video if you were taking a day off or a little under the weather.

Only remorse is the "cheap bastard" in me hates that I am only getting $5 for the Gen 3 Echo Dot that I think i got on a previous Trade In Deal of a Gen 2 Dot about a year ago.

I think that deal was something like $17, but the return triggers the 25% discount.

Seems that you can't select a Gen 3 Echo Dot for the Trade In unless you purchased it direct from Amazon for some reason. They give you $5 for a Gen 1 or Gen 2 Echo Dot but can't select Dot 3 unless previously purchased.

i’ve been debating the same thought with trading in my second gen echo in the kitchen. the reality is we don’t NEED any of these things so it feels a bit flighty. OTOH, that kitchen echo is driving me crazy as it’s a bit hard of hearing…

No, we don't need them, but sometimes one person's 'gadget' is another person's GoTo.

I'm considering something else we have no need for — a motion detecting soap dispenser for the kitchen and bath.

How decadent.

Sometimes little conveniences make things so seamless, that after awhile living without them is so savage.

I blame it on putting electric starters in cars.

It was all downhill from there.

But if I found a reasonably priced motion detecting, heated shaving foam dispenser, that would be a Must-Have!

I did this last year and I really like the 8" Show. We moved the 5" Show to my wife's craft room.

Interestingly, we traded in a couple of Dot 2's and got the credit and bought the 8" Show and a Dot 3. Then a month ago I got a refund on the original cost of one of the Dot 2's that we had bought in 2017 on a deal where we paid like $30. That was in addition to the trade in credit. I chatted with an Amazon person who was befuddled but finally told me not to worry about it. So, our net cost on the 8" Show was pretty low when all was said and done!
