printer for wife's new M1 iMac?
Posted by: MartyStickle

Got the new M1 base model for wife. Her old printer, a Brother MFCJ870DW no worky. Going to Brother sites shows there are no drivers for any of the new systems. I tried removing her printer and re-adding to no avail.

Do i have to buy her a new printer and if so, which one? She likes having a color all-in-one model.

Appreciate any help.

Epson eco-tank. Refills with squeeze bottles of ink.
I've been super happy with mine (ET-4550)

I had to get drivers for my Canon off the UK site. Apparently, there are some patent issues with drivers needed for the M1 in the states. That could a similar issue for you\. It could worth checking overseas drivers, nothing to lose.

Tried a generic Gutenprint CUPS driver?

I've hard that it works under Monterey and I've heard that it works on M1 (original) Macs. So, it will probably work on a new M1 running Monterey.

Second Ecotank Recommendation. Stupid easy to load more ink. AirPrint works great.
Picked up ours at Costco

hmmm, that's an 8+ year old model but CUPS should do the trick.
Here's Brother's macOS Monterey link.

No MFCJ870DW listing but for the MFC-J880DW 'driver':

We recommend using AirPrint. If your machine does not support AirPrint,
download Brother iPrint&Scan from the App Store.

fwiw, my old MFC-J825DW has worked fine w/ CUPS for years printing and scanning;
(never used the fax function) I'm now on Mojave.

My brother printers and scanners have been working on Big Sur. There was a glitch in permissions that had to be manually resolved.

I’m intrigued by the Epsom ecotank printers. Is the output good? Did they solve the clogging issue?

Thanks all. I decided to go for a new Eco Print Epson which I found at Sam's online with pickup next day. Got the 2760 with an extra black ink for $249 and it was super easy to set up/fill the tanks and set up wifi. Air print now works from all computers and also from our phones/ipads, etc. We'll give away the old Brother to the woman we're giving our old 2009 iMac to. Output looks great.
