So my family (wife, daughter, myself) go to see my cousin in AZ for Thanksgiving. We skipped last year and had decided somewhat recently we'd try it this year. We are all vaccinated. They are all vaccinated except my cousin's husband.

Well today, she texted my wife and told her that he just tested positive. So knowing that our flight is scheduled for the 20th, would you still go?

Me? Yes. Whole family has had it. (And I know that doesn't mean we can't get it again.)

In your case, it boils down to if you're concerned about getting it or not. If you have any medical conditions that might complicate it, can't afford to isolate some when you return, or don't want to otherwise take the risk of getting it, even though you're vaccinated.

No. Knowing he was unvaccinated, I would not have scheduled the trip in the first place. That said, if everyone was vaccinated and tested and confirmed negative, I’d go. Get tested and confirmed negative prior and do the same upon return. Unfortunately, because of the gentleman who chose to remain unvaccinated tested positive, cancel the trip. Such a shame.

FWIW, flying is likely safer than participating in a slew of other activities. The airport itself may be no mote or less safe but planes are sanitized and have hospital grade HEPA air filtration systems. Masks are required. They’re likely noticeably safer than going to a local store.

No. It isn’t worth the risk. Also, you can’t know the course his illness will take. He could end up in the hospital or it could be quick and light and only require 10 days of isolation.

I am really leaning towards erring on the side of caution.

But some might say, if I were really doing that I wouldn't have scheduled the flight to begin with. Honestly, for a bit, our numbers locally have been going down. We're all vaccinated (albeit in March and April). It seemed ok-ish to go. So up until now, I was more concerned about AA @#$%& up the flights and getting stranded at DFW or something. But now, I'm back to more concern over the virus.

If after five days, THEN a vaccinated person in the household gets a "breakthrough" case from the sick person? And you're arriving just when they'd be be most contagious?

I'd pass... I know four people that have had "breakthrough" cases. Three mild, but one serious... #4, fortunately, did recover with no lasting effects.

I would "pass". If you had even just a FEW more days since their first positive, I'd probably say the risk is minor... but the timing for this is just too close.

Well, I said no because I wouldn't want to take the chance. Actually, I hate to fly so would've said no anyway. I'm thinking just the fact that you are asking means you are uncomfortable. Would that stop you from having a good time? I knew this was going to be a few-year-haul so have gotten really good about blowing trips off. Don't know how close you are to this cousin, but it's the husband's fault, not yours.

Hopefully you don’t have to attend a funeral.

I'm not sure thr travel part matters here. Wouldyou go to see other relatives for dinner? Would you dine out locally? Seems like the same deal.

For the unvaccinated, covid is just as deadly as it was a year ago when morgues were overflowing. Even if he survives, the effects may be life altering. Getting together for a holiday meal should be the least of anyone's worries.

A friend of mine caught covid early on in 2020. It's been over a year and he still can't walk through a supermarket to do food shopping. He can barely walk 50 yards without sitting down.

My daughter and her SO just got over breakthrough cases of COVID. They were both fully vaccinated, since April I think with two doses of Moderna, and they got it from a fully vaccinated friend.
They didn’t get very sick, but they were pretty much out of commission and felt pretty crappy, for about five days and of course had to quarantine for ten.
Your cousin very well may test positive at some point soon, since she will presumably be living with her husband during this time, so that just adds a whole other level of “what if” to the equation.

I'd say 'no' and we're in a somewhat related situation.

We'll head to AZ to see Mom for Thxg, but brother's family is not vaxxed. However the decision is easy for us as Mom has uninvited him and his family until they get the jab, which seems unlikely to happen anytime soon. Oh well, Thanksgiving and likely Christmas will be a slightly less-well attended affair this year.

Wait. I just reread this. Arizona? You can be outside, no? Unless you're in the mountains somewhere, I would guess.

If you are going to stay in a hotel and then only visit outside the household without the sick family member, feel free to go. The likelihood of anyone getting sick is low without extended exposure.

Hah. That was exactly what the wife and I were talking about this morning. Two days ago, I was only mildly timid about going. But when we visit my cousin, I really shut down. I can go the whole week and do absolutely nothing. Just sit on the couch and veg. No todo's, no commitments. Nothing. The house was a "safe space" for us. But today it occurred to me that I am doing ALL of that IN THEIR HOUSE. So whether he recovers completely or not. The rest of the family, vaccinated or not, can catch it. And they can transmit it. And it could be one of us could get it. B/c we're all in one house together...for a week. We may get sick. We may not. We may need to quarantine. Which means we'd have to stay in AZ. And miss work. And school. Just so many variables with a sick person in the actual place we'd be staying. So that really kind of made it clear for me.

Hell we've only gone out to eat one time since March of 2020 and I love to go to eat. We went to the Cheesecake Factory in mid afternoon after we picked up my iPhone SE at the Apple Store. Where this is at every person coming in the door had on a mask and all employees were masked and they added 2 foot high plexiglass to the tops of the booths. I felt a bit strange about going out to eat but I also felt fairly safe. We're vaxxed but have not gotten our booster, going to try next week.

I am vaccinated, had a booster, and have no issues flying, did it 3 times in the last two weeks. But would not go in the situation that you describe - someone from the family can be a carrier without even knowing it, then someone from your family may be the same etc. I would wait until the person tests negative and then five days later all of his family tests negative before considering visiting. That would be way past Thanksgiving.

I'd take it a step further and wait a minimum of 14 days after _everyone_ tests negative. The people themselves might be fine but the entire house will be contaminated. They'll need to do a serious deep cleaning and give it some time to ensure the virus is no longer on surfaces. Or, at least so little is left that it won't matter.

'course, if this was me, I wouldn't visit for several months. If at some point a visit is warranted, all individuals must be confirmed vaccinated and confirmed negative. No vaccination and negative tests, no visit. No exceptions. And, it is the same in reverse. If they aren't willing to abide by my requirements, then they're welcome to stay home.
