I really like my Cornwalls but sadly they're in storage as we no place to put them at the moment. LaScala's are big. New La Scala's are over $13K.

I paid $300 or 350 for my early 80's Cornwall's at a yard sale about 15 years ago with the intention of flipping them until I heard them. Guy was moving back to SF and said he wasn't dragging them back across the country again.

had them in the 1st studio I worked at years ago.
But those surrounds, I'd bet, are dried.
And the cones could be tired.
I'd be sure Klipsch has parts to fit the drivers, jic.

Maybe a deal for you, but not for me. My ears probably couldn't tell the difference between them and, say, a $500 pair of speakers.

Here is another thread that discusses longevity of parts. I love my senior Klipsch collection but the prices are going up. Still using my Heresy 2’s and Kg 5.2’s but would love to try La Scalas. Can you ask for a price adjustment? Listen to them first obviously.

JBL Paragon or northing!

These won’t have foam surrounds on the woofer. They (and the cones) could be just fine. If you’ve got the time to invest it seems well worth to go and take a listen, especially if they’re in good shape. Would a trip to the factory on Arkansas be an option?

Paragon is beautiful, but I wonder how they'd sound to todays ear, even with real music, not modern squashed pop.

Self powered have become so good. JBL, Focal, etc.

40-year-old Klipsch.

Dunno that they'd thrill like they did at Secret Sound in '76. They had KLIPSCHORNs custom tuned by one of Pauls disciples.
Unfortunately, connected to an MCI 424 console. The Crown amp could not help what came off that dog. It was not discrete, but Harris 411s I think. The discrete strips were a different beast all together.
Nice on drums and P-bass.

MCI JH400 recording console.

The Harris 411 was an early IC. In the case of the MCI, a "can" type, not a DIP.

Discrete is/was an amp made of individual transistors (in that time).

Sort of like an M1 processor chip, except unable to leap short buildings in a single or many bounds.
A wheel-barrow to a Tesla . Apples and oranges.

MCI "design" (from a "cookbook) for discrete transistor amps had more balls especially when couple with whatever input transformer they used on those strips, which I don't think were the Jensens they used for later versions of the console.

Congratulations! You have finished pro-audio gobbledygook 101.
You can now try your hand at fixing music consoles for $15/hr that will be used by (very lucky, in many cases) "musician" millionaires.

After a time (15 years or so) you will realize that the money isn't in fixing whats broke unless you're a plumber or electrician.
The $$ is in being a friendly operator that says yes to whatever the client would like to believe .... that day.

La Scala in Milano has excellent acoustics.

Well from past sales it looks like a good price if In great shape. Low ball them for $2,500 (for your gas).
A friend that used to buy used cars as a side job would have a fat roll of paper money and spread it out as he counted.
Road trip! I call shotgun.

I've never hear actual Klipsch speakers (their computer speakers don't count) except for some Klipschorns (Corner-Horns) in the late 60s at an audio store in SF.

I love the sound of a horn-loaded speaker.

Well, at least by judging by those.

Before I die, I think I'd really like to own a pair of much more practical and reasonably priced horn loaded boxes.

This summer my adult son found 2 La Scalas at an estate sale for, I kid you not, $500 each. Maybe they didn't know what they were selling, although it wouldn't be too hard to find out with little effort. He snapped them up in a heartbeat. This was in Portland, OR.
I am no audiophile, but when I listened to some music of which I am very familiar via YouTube (HD recordings) over bluetooth, I heard things I never ever heard before on lower quality equipment.
I felt they were nothing short of amazing. So my opinion is this was a good deal.

I had a pair of oak Forte's that I bought in the 80s for $500, and sold a few years ago for $750.

I loved the sound, but they took up too much space...

What's a strip? A console channel. 1 per mic or line. I believe that MCI were the 1st makers of strip consoles.
IE: all under one piece of metal.
Others mentioned below made modules. Better grounding lower noise, more robust in every way. A pre amp module, EQ, mutlitrack assign, Aux (efx) sends, fader ...

What console? The MCI was a recording and mix console of the day. It was the Ford of it's time.
British Neve and US (from my hometown, actually) API (and others) were hand built full of flavor recording beasts. Whether rnr, jazz, classical ...
Even Rudy Van Gelder replaced his original hand built Fairchild (of aeronautic fame) with a Neve. I think it is still there.
