Driving advice.

Kid is on his way back from Lowe's. He sends me a picture of gas for $2.89 ... that's low around here in TN. I tell him to fill up the truck, including the truck bed. Just drive slow so that it doesn't slosh around. Remember it can catch fire or become a bomb.

He probably won't do that.

Kid: "We need an EV, ASAP."

Me: "Drive slower. Like, in neutral. Look for downhills to exploit. Turn off the engine between towns. Never break for any reason."

He seldom asks me for advice; it's as if he knows everything. Kids today!

Most (all?) cars made in the last many years use more gas when coasting in neutral than coasting in gear. They supply no gas while coasting in gear, but do if you put it in neutral.

doesn't that imply that you can coast in gear forever without running out of gas?

No? Eventually you'll stop coasting from gravity or momentum.

Sure, except for gravity, rolling resistance, and inclined planes....

How much gas can you haul in the bed and not have it spill or leak out? Seems like you would get more of it home if he filled the cabin, or at least asked another person buying gas to fill the cabin, perhaps by pumping it through the space at the top of a slightly opened window. A crew-cab can hold hundreds of gallons.

Gas prices in California haven't been that low since last century.

Was your truck made in the last 50 years? You expect your kid to safely stop your truck with no power steering or power brakes when the engine is off ???

On the Big Island of Hawaii, when it snows, people will fill up their truck beds with snow to bring down the mountain, and you can really pack it in there and go high up too... Last time I was up there, we saw one truck that had buckled from the weight, collapsed between the bed and the cab...

$3.49 here in Northern Lower MI. as of about an hour ago.

Block the truck bed drains before filling, deckeda! Otherwise, it wouldn't be safe. /s

Mr. Lahey: Why don't you get a life Rick? Why don't ya go to community college like Julian here. Hey, I got a good idea. You could teach, livin' in a car and growin' dope 101.

Ricky: Hehe. And you can teach how to get drunk, get fired from the police force, become a... lousy trailer park supervisor that sucks, hangs around with a @#$%&' idiot that doesn't wear a shirt, and looks like a dick but thinks he looks good... 101.

Well, he made it back and without the large bags of insulation being gas-soaked. That said, I didn't check to see if he used Speedy's interior suggestion. He quickly moved into Avoidance Mode so as not to hear me say he now needs to install the insulation.

That reminds me, November is when our Volt demands we burn our annual nine gallon tankful of gas. Maybe I can get free shipping on nine gallons from Amazon so that I don’t have to make my annual obligatory gas station stop. I just hope I can remember how to work the pump.

Maybe only put in 2 gallons this year.

$5.05 for 97octane (for a turbo) today in the SFValley.

where can you get 97 at the pump? That's so cool. I have to settle for 93 and octane boost here. Or spike it with 2-3 gallons of toluene.

Nah, I tried that, it won’t work. It has to burn a full tank’s worth of gas. It does occasional “engine maintenance” gas burns that might last up to 10 minutes and it still runs off the battery.

I could say the 1 an 7 are adjacent and it was a typo, but that would mean I was actually paying attention, which I wasn't, to a throwaway line.
