File Conversion Favor: Windows .EXE

Friends,

I'm investigating an incident in local government and filed an open records request for video surveillance files.

What they sent me are "exaqVision" .exe files, which I cannot access through Mac OS.

Is anyone here able to help by opening the files on a windows machine and converting to a Mac-accessible video format and then sending them back via wetransfer.com?

Thanks in advance for any assistance you might provide.

They have not yet satisfied the request, because executable files are not video files.

.EXE files are executable files. That would be an application of some type.

Could be a self extracting zip file. Try renaming A COPY to .zip and opening it then.

I hadn't thought of that. I guess it's possible.

SR,

I work with attorneys and investigators that often receive surveillance footage for their cases. Often the systems will output an exe file (player) and the media files in a folder. Did they only provide you with just exe files?

I also noticed that exacqVision offers a macOS client on their website. If they did provide you with media files in a folder, you may be able to download the macOS client and point it to the media files to play them.

I was able to help him out.

There were two large .exe files, each several hundred MB so obviously those contained the video. Opening up each .exe loaded a little video player which had an option to Save As .mov (among others) in the menu.

Glad that worked out.
Many years ago, iirc you could do it with StuffIt Expander.
It's still around, now StuffIt Expander 16 [apps.apple.com]

Can't believe that systems export to EXE format these days, especially with all the malware out there.

Yep. Thats what we have here at work for our security system. I have to remind the boss that when he exports, to export it as an ACTUAL video file. I guess it exports as an EXE b/c people don't have a native way of playing video? Or thats what they think.

Thanks to Mike, and to all who responded.

They exported to .exe, and although they could have converted to an actual video format, they refused. They don't like me very much. <g>

Reviewing the video now. Appreciate all of your assistance.
