You are an engineer with a good imagination. Rig it to be elevated above bent knee level for clump removal. Use closet sliding door/shower door tracks screwed to the wall. Bring the litter box to you. Would the cats use it if it were at belt height?

We have one rotund mistress that is not capable of raising her body to sufficient height. She's on a perpetual diet but seems to find snacks wherever she goes.

We have a folding chair that is dedicatee for litter removal. No kneeling needed!

I dream of the day every litterbox includes a built-in interdimensional Litter Genie that simply drops the offending detritus into an alternate dimension.

I suppose it does flirt with a dimensional war should the source of the deposits be traced back to us, and an attendant massive loss of life, but, it maybe could be worth it.

We have two cats in the house but one goes outside to do his business. We use one of these for Ellie inside. We carry it outside every night and sit it on the outside steps and use a little scoop to sift out the waste, we try to keep about an inch to 2" of Fresh Step clumping litter in it.

Friends have a three piece kitty litter system. The base is at least 6" deep and has the bulk of the litter. The other pieces are slotted trays that nest but easily get "pushed down" into the base tray and the appropriate amount of kitty litter rises through the slots. Each day (even multiple times a day) these friends simply bend over (NO kneeling required) and take hold of the top slotted tray. While lifting the top tray, they give a gentle shake so the unused litter falls back in the base and then dump the contents before "resetting" said tray as the bottom of the slotted trays. I think the system is called "Lift & Sift". A quick search came up with:

Agree with the Litter Robot - it's the bomb. But that's only IF they use it … You can lead a cat to the potty, but you can't force one to use it. So that's the devilish detail you're facing here.

The scoping and scooping can definitely be a back breaker - particularly for FIVE cats! Holy cow!!

With FIVE cats, the robot idea is probably not a cost-effective one, though, since you'd surely need more than one of the robots. The "tried and true" 1 box/cat plus one extra applies to these auto-pooper-scoopers as well. And keep in mind that some cats just won't go where others have gone before …

Wish there was better news, you might find that two of your cats will reliably use litter robots, and then the rest won't go near them - so you'll still need 3 regular boxes somewhere for them.

Additionally, those robots start at $500/unit. One or two cats - and you might get lucky, both will actually use the same mixer, and all would be well. But with FIVE cats, you'll need to get creative, because they certainly will, especially if you decide to mess with where they mess!

"Only" 3 cats here, and still only one will use the robot (and even then it's only to drop a loaf). All cats use the two boxes we provide to urinate; one uses a box for both #1 and #2, and one cat has to have paper put down since he won't drop a #2 into any box (he's got a tumor slowly growing around his colon; unfortunately it's inoperable, and we're told he probably won't be around much longer). However, that cat has put a year under his shrinking belt line since he was diagnosed with the tumor just over a year ago. We were originally told maybe six months. Well, the maybe part was obviously correct, and we're ok that maybe it's going to be a bit longer. He's shrunk from about 18lb to 10lb. His long hair hides the inevitable, but he's basically skin and bones now. Still eats two meals a day - probably 90% of it going to feed his tumor.

Bottom line is that your cats are already pretty well acclimated and accustomed to whatever it is they're doing now, and any changes you try to make will take time and patience … some of the robotic devices are more work than just getting some large boxes and a scooper that doesn't make the job harder.

We have 5 of those for our 4 cats. It's not quite as easy as you make it out to be.

Wow, I wish I could justify spending $500 on a litterbox robot but I fear it would be rejected. I can see how it would be worth the money.
