? for Designers: Font Collections? What to buy?
Posted by: JoeM

I have the Adobe Type Basics PS collection + assorted fonts that I've been designing with for sometime but am looking to add more fonts (maybe a collection?) that have a bit more pizazz, as the Type Basics collection is made up of pretty standard stuff.

- What do designers buy/use here for more creative looking stuff?
- Do you purchase as needed or buy collections?
- Is there a collection out there that you like that doesn't break the bank?
- Anyone use fonts from Veer?

TIA

I never have a budget for fonts, but I have gotten a lot of mileage out of [www.blambot.com] free fonts. Comic book based fonts. House Industries has been rather helpful but they ain't free.

I'm not a print designer per-se (I'm a video/web specialist), but I often have need of fonts. I've found a number of useful fonts at:

Most are free for personal use, and inexpensive for commercial use.

good luck.

Great way to get a nice collection is to purchase the large clipart set from novadevelopment.com

besides getting some GREAT clipart, also comes with a healthy collection of Agfa and Btstream fonts in PS and truetype

Thanks, everyone. Finally putting the budget request in tomorrow for my dept's new stuff and just got told that we have gotten a poop-load of extra $ added to our marketing budget. My boss wants me to request everything I might want now. I'm up to about $10K already between Mac and PC stuff but would love to splurge on some stylish fonts for once. I'm keeping my fingers crossed but so far so good.

What about Open Type vs PS? IS it true you can use Open Type on PC as well as Mac? Any other reason to purchase instead of PS?

Letterhead fonts has some tasty designs, especially for display, headers and old Timey stuff.

Not too expensive. I've bought from them and have been satisfied. They also have a few free fonts (but read the fine print, some may have commercial restrictions) and also a page of tips for various things you can do design-wise.

I just read that Letterhead has added some serious restrictions to their font licenses, creating a situation where among other things:

Fonts won't appear in font management programs

Can't collect the fonts to send to the printing company

No embedding in PDF files or other file formats

Can't access the fonts across a network

More at: [letterheadfonts.com]

I love the collection at [www.fontsite.com], but it may not be expensive enough to use up the money burning in your pockets.

Thanks for the Heads-up, Mystery Guest. Some of those things won't affect me, but not seeing fonts in the management program and having to turn everything into curves could be a deal breaker.

Occasionally Adobe's OpenType Font Folio crops up on eBay. But your overlords might feel uncomfortable buying it there.

That's the font collection I'd want to try to get, but it at full price, it might be a tough sell for you.

That was the first price I checked. Man, that's a small fortune. I know that wouldn't fly for management and you are right, they wouldn't buy from ebay.
