Chicken Gizzards! Why Can't We Find Them For The Dressing With Our T-Giving Feast

Both my sisters say that they can't find chicken gizzards for the upcoming Turkey day meal. (We use them chopped up in the dressing).

My sister sent her husband to get some, and the three stores he checked were out. He asked a worker at one store and the guy told him they were out of season!! (I'm calling shenanigans on that).

I've tried ordering them online at my regular store and no go, out of stock.

Anyone know WHY chicken gizzards are in short supply? There's plenty of chicken for sale, so why not chicken gizzards? confused smiley

I think it might depend where you shop. Some of the fancier, "middle class" locations won't have them, but they are at the .... um... "more ethnic" locations?

EG, my wife loves fried chicken gizzards (barf smiley), so I have to go to the East side of town to pick them up for her.

Is this in addition to the gizzards that came with your bird? I stew them with the neck overnight and chip them into my gravy!

I'm not in charge of the Thanksgiving Day cooking, Rolando, and probably for the best.

All the big box grocery stores usually carry them, but for some reason none of them have any now. The item shows up, but all have "out of stock" below them.

Good call on the ethnic type stores. I'll pass that on to my sisters. I don't think we have any up here in the "wilderness".

I'm pretty much down with fried anything including those delicious livers.

With both gizzards and livers, I like the flavor, but the texture is not good. Gizzards are like pencil erasers, and livers are... I don't know what they are like, but, not good.

I DID discover that gizzards, when pressure canned in a jar with the right spices, are really good! They lose that "chewing through a pink pearl eraser" texture and get soft. I use them in noodle bowls.

I never have trouble finding either one, but, I haven't looked recently. My area has a pretty good "ethnic" population, so the local grocery always has chicken feet, livers, and gizzards. The feet make great chicken stock!

My guess is the four companies that process 75% of the meat in the US found it a more reliable revenue stream to sell the innards to pet food factories, than to stock them up for 3 weeks in November for the few people that want them to make their own stuffing.

Get turkey gizzards. The taste is close enough, especially in seasoned dressing.

We don’t understand this, either. We always get these for our cats, at one of the few grocery stores we shop. This year, it’s been much, much harder to get them. We have continuously bought them for about ten years. Suddenly they are not so available…

Success! My sister called today and said she was in Wal-Mart to pick up a prescription, and decided to walk over to the meat section to see if any packs of gizzards were available. She walked up to the guy stocking chicken and grabbed three packs from the cart.

3 packs is overkill, but Christmas is fast approaching! :-)
