Since a cop already checked it out, I presume they ran the plates to see if it was stolen. I'd wait a week as long as it's not blocking the road or anything. Sometimes people don't have the cash or time to deal with it swiftly. And if someone financially can't deal with it swiftly, having to deal with it being impounded won't make anything easier.
