Induction burner hot plate sear test - mixed results

Tonight I made lamb chops in a cast iron pan on my induction hot pad. It started out very well - got hot quickly and was searing nicely. Then the display started showing E7 - 'Top plate overheat' - I ended up switching to my electric range.

I guess its unsurprising I'd get this result with a $40 hot pad. I doubt a more expensive model would have this same problem.

Seems that induction can sear just fine, just not my induction hot pad.

I've never had any problem using a carbon steel pan on my cheap induction burner.

However, those do not "hold heat" quite like cast iron.

Never had that happen. When using cast iron I have the power set to
900W on my Tayama 1500. Beautiful sear on steaks.

No problem here, either (except for uneven heating).

Was just going to recommend a carbon steel pan, because it will heat up faster. Less stress on the heat source. I do like my CI but am considering switching, at least for some applications.

How does one "stress" a heat source?

It is what it is.

Drawing more amperage than the components can handle?
Getting something hotter than the high-temp sensor detects?

Induction burners are not heat sources. They indirectly cause a pan to get hot. If a pan gets too hot, it can damage the electronics in the burner.

This is what my manual says:

E7 - 'Top plate overheat'
Pan got so hot it tripped the protection. That'll definitely happen with
smaller cast iron pans & with any small, empty/dry pot or pan.
I can't recall setting my 1500W unit over 900W except for boiling a big
pot of water or steaming.
