Alternatively, Amazon has a 1TB Crucial MX500 for $85

Ombligo,

Not a comparable drive. The Crucial is a standard 2.5" SSD and is nearly 50% slower. Add $15 to $20 for a USB box and it costs about the same as the SanDisk. I still wouldn't go for the Crucial/box combo because of its speed. The SanDisk is a better deal.

FWIW, it seems $99 is the going rate for the SanDisk model from various places including Amazon.com. The 2TB version costs about twice as much. Costco doesn't have it. Amazon and other places have it.

Does that matter to the typical consumer who's not going to use it as a boot drive? For example, I have an old OWC 3G SSD that works fine with Plex.

The Crucial also scales in price pretty nicely. The 4TB version is $360, which seems pretty darn good.

Thanks for this post! I submitted to get a price adjustment on an order of the same SSD @ Costco from a month back.

Free,

It depends. I wouldn't want the Crucial as a boot drive if I planned to connect it to a Thunderbolt 3 port on a machine equipped with one. I'd want an NVME SSD in a box with USB 3.1 Gen 2, USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3. I'd use an older, slower 2.5" model like that particular Crucial as a clone backup, though.

It's a good price for the moment but SSD prices have been dropping in the last 3 months. In the last few months I have gotten a dozen notices from Camel about price watches I set two or three years ago.

Don't be surprised if prices drop another 20% to 30% by April.
