Yeah, most good bands reproduce their songs better when done live, if they're doing it right!

Bob Seger “Turn the Page” - studio version sounds downright anemic compared to the live version from the Live Bullet album.

'An evening with John Denver' - I cannot think of a single studio version that's better than what he performed in LA.

To me, live vs not live is like asking if I like Yosemite more than a picture of Yosemite. It's no contest. Sure, the picture will have perfect lighting, but it's static and you can't smell the trees.

having worked in live recording for a couple years in the 80s, I can tell you that not all live is 100% live or even 75%.

That said:
Allmans at the Fillmore.
Joe Cocker Mad Dogs.
Sly at Woodstock.

Of the 100's of shows I did back in the day, maybe a couple of dates with Prince. No idea if they were ever released. And a few performances at Live Aid. Bowies 50th birthday bash.
My fave is CBGB in '76. Great performances of struggling (at the time) bands. I wish Blondie and T Heads had been allowed in by their labels.

Most live LPs have way to much house in them during the performance for my taste.
I'd prefer live like Joe Jackson did for the LP Big World (though there's not much on the LP I dig).

One quintessential example is Live at Budokan. The earlier Cheap Trick studio recordings were not as lively / driving. This is performance-based; Budokan had its share of overdubs later but not in a way that took away from it. Fun fact: An early CD used a different master that lacked an overdub on one song and you can easily hear the mistake not present on the LP. And I say all this knowing the audience mics were mixed in way too high, in order to capture what sounds like many tens of thousands of shrieking girls.

Now take it the other way, with Side 2 of Purple Rain. 3 songs are actually a live recording, albeit again with edits done later. No one in that concert could have known what they were being introduced to in that moment because those songs never existed as studio recordings.

[youtu.be]

That’s the title track; the video and audio quality are abysmal here, but that’s the original performance we came to know a year later in a little different form.

Anything done by Neil Young and Crazy Horse.

Waaaaay better live, IMO.

Jackson Browne - Doctor My Eyes at Glastonbury Festival, 2010. David Lindley’s lap steel and Mark Goldenberg’s ( my favorite JB guitarist) guitar solos really smoke.

Fleetwood Mac - Silver Springs [www.youtube.com]

Question: Do you prefer this version of "Silver Springs" because Nicks infamously used her performance to express her years of pent-up anger and frustration with Buckingham to his face and the loss that she still felt? If you had never seen the video and only heard the audio, would you still prefer it to the album version?

It is what it is.

Those early Fleetwood Mac live performances are So Much Better than the album versions. I'd have been a much bigger fan if those were what I heard as a kid.

Dire Straits "Sultans of Swing" from "Alchemy-Live", you can view on YT. It is an extended version with multiple solos.
Multiple tracks from AC/DC's Live at Donnington, best from the video for full effect.
