Any Sonos users subscribe to Apple Music?

I'm trying to learn if signing into Apple Music via the Sonos software allows the service to continue playing if the controller (phone) is turned off/slept.

(The gift-recipient is an iPhone user and Apple Music subscriber. And some Sonos speakers are AirPlay compatible. But AirPay requires the stream to play from the device and not the cloud, as Spotify Connect or Tidal Connect do.)

Thanks.

If you want to AirPlay to Sonos then the iDevice has to be on (but not necessarily unlocked) b/c the music is actually playing on the device and then being streamed to the Sonos

However, if you’re using the iDevice as the ‘remote’ for the Sonos (controller as you mentioned) then, no, the device doesn’t need to be on or awake for the playback to continue as you’re just using the iDevice to control the playback, not provide the playback

The latter, yes. No AirPlay used. So does that mean within the Sonos app you see the Apple Music UI and control it from there, never going back to the native Music app?

No, you use the Sonos UI to control Apple Music (or any other source)

You go into the Sonos app and integrate Apple Music into it (there is an authorization/linking step) and Sonos controls the playback - no other app needed. Of course, you can Airplay if you want to but you don't have to.

And if you have any Alexa devices(or I assume Google voice but I haven't tested it personally), you can skip to the next song/control volume/etc. from them.

The latest iteration of the Sonos app is a little buggy. The player will skip ahead to the next song, half way through the current song.

Having said that, I really like how Sonos integrates different music services into their app. I use Amazon through Sonos all the time. Works great. I am sure Apple Music will be the same. I am a big Sonos fan, for the moment. Just clean up that glitch.
