refurb Mini M1 in da house - base model

You can thank me for any new hardware that will be announced in the next 10 minutes!!!

My main iron is a heavily upgraded Mac Pro (early '09, flashed and maxed out on almost every aspect). However, it keeps crashing on me (sometimes 2-3 times per day). My patience is thin, and I am getting lazy with troubleshooting computer stuff anymore. I love all the possibilities of installing drives, swapping cards, etc, that the Pro gives me, I kinda just feel, I don't know, over it, I guess.

I'll fresh install programs that I use, and move data, and run this for a bit. If all goes well, then maybe I'll mess with the Pro. Or, I could just end up parting it out.

I pre-ordered the new stack from our sponsors, as I already have large SSD and NVMe drives I can move into it. If that setup fits my needs, I may just stick with the Mini (or similar) going forward.

Refurb Leader!
Does it look like a brand new product? I've never gotten Apple
refurb that didn't look factory fresh (except the brown box).

mini leader... hub cost nearly as much as the mini!

I mean you do you, but this is the "deals" section... and cases for SSDs and NVMes are $15.

"Does it look like a brand new product? I've never gotten Apple"
-- Of COURSE it looks brand new!

"(btw, are you the ice cream guy from years ago? I could be misremembering.)"
-- Yeah that's me. I make it less than I used to, but I still make it for family gatherings. It's soon time for Candy Cane Oreo!

"I mean you do you, but this is the "deals" section... and cases for SSDs and NVMes are $15."
-- I know. I'm not averse to spending money (to a degree). I like the all-in-one idea of the stack. And I'll probably end up getting some cases as well (more SSDs and NVMes than the stack will accommodate).

“ cases for SSDs and NVMes are $15 “

Pretty much the same thing, right?

Not even close to the same thing... but not even close to the same price either. =)

IHMO, the STX is really for a *very* small fraction of people who *need* the three extra 40 GB/s TBolt ports for expandability.

Hooking up a HDD RAID, or a huge backup drive or some SATA SSDs?... overkill. But hooking up a OWC thunderblade or OWC express 4M2 -- absolutely necessary.

We arent even sure if the internal NVMe on the STX transfers thru the hub at TB speed or is limited to 10 GB/s... which doesn't take advantage of the fact that its Tbolt.

If I remember right Bills MP has over 100 GB of ram, and some other goodies. Replacing it with a M1 might be nice for some things, sure, but slower with others. And its the base model.

All Im saying is that for standard use, a simple case is prob fine.

$300 could get you a 2 TB NVMe and basic 10 GB/s case, with money left over. Or a true TB case... that's all.

Saw that... externally? or internally? And still far below NVMe rated speed. O

OWC express is rated at 1533 MB/s, was thinking it might have the same chip internally for the NVMe.

I think the STX is great, but just has a small use audience. Would be a great compliment to a maxed out mini being used as a video server or some other video device with a huge NVMe 4M2 RAID 0 hanging off it.

Yep. And it sure is pretty. smiling smiley

Yes, not that specific; I expect we might get clarification from Larry or Jamie.

I don't need the STX but I do like what it brings to the table.

I'm so tired of <5Gbps, and even <10Gpbs should be so yesterday.

OWC express is rated at 1533 MB/s

I've got one, and if I'm honest, it doesn't impress me that much.

I really want > 2000Mbps, maybe even > 2500Mbps, just because the 8200 has been measured at 3000Mbps.

I don't need that kind of speed, and I probably wouldn't notice it in many operations, after all, how fast can MacTracker or email open.

But if it's there, I want it — just because.

The problem is I see lots of up to 40Gps enclosures, but with no solid reviews I don't want to spend the money.

~$15 or so for cheap up to 5Gbps boxes are a different story, but then I'm really bored with 5Gbps.

I'm still ticked that my SanDisk Portable NVMe is so slow on my M1 MBA.

And it sure is pretty.

That and the added ports plus the (slower) 2.5" storage make me really want one.

But the possible lack of up to 40Gps gives me some pause.

I really want to make my 8200 sing.

Or fly.

Even the 1500Mbps could be tolerable in the STX.
