My heating system is gas fired hot water radiators. It is currently controlled by a Honewell round thermostat (mercury switch type, I think) located in the basement near the furnace. I would like to get a wireless replacement that I can place on the second floor. I imagine a receiver that replaces the old thermostat in the basement, and a control unit that wirelessly transmits to it. Temperature sensing and adjustment to be only done on the second floor. Does this exist?

Not sure what you describe exists but there are thermostats with remote sensors. Maybe this will help

...are you certain about that? That sounds guaranteed to make your upstairs too hot.

Put me down for 'run a wire' as this sounds poorly installed. Typically the thermostat would be on the first floor while a second sensor could be installed on the second floor.

I don't want to run wire. Can it not be done wirelessly?

I am beginning to think that it can't be done wirelessly. I think maybe the thermostat must be wired to the furnace. Wireless functionality is just for changing thermostat settings, not for wirelessly connecting stat to furnace. Can anyone confirm this?

My ecobee with remote wireless sensors can be programmed to which sensor it uses. Just need wifi. Use your smart device to control it wherever, or tie it into Alexa or Homekit for control.

Can it be programmed to only use the remote sensor and not to accept manually inputed changes at the thermostat? I don't want my basement dwellers to be able to change the settings.

You can put a PIN on it.

You can manage which temperature sensors impact which settings. Never tried it, but you should be able to remove the thermostat temperature readings from the settings. Then use a PIN on the thermostat to prevent others from making changes.
