My wife and I moved to a rural area having no cable, dsl, or available LTE home internet. The previous owner of the house used Hughsnet, and the next-door neighbor uses Viasat. I looked into those services but I did not care for the terms - a two year contract and purchase of equipment for metered service. Once our home purchase was assured in June, I requested service from Starlink and paid the $99 deposit. At that time and until today my account page stated Starlink planned to initiate service in my area (SE Louisiana) in mid to late 2021. Today's email pushed that back to mid 2022, and they blamed supply shortages for the delay.

Luckily there is cellphone LTE and 5G service at this location, so we will have limited internet via tether. Why AT&T won't offer LTE or 5G home service at this location is something I don't understand.

We are looking forward to Starlink service.

5G has a really short range, hundreds of meters to maybe 1-2km. If you wanted 5G you'd need a base station on your property most likely.

Both Hughesnet and Viasat are garbage. I currently live outside of Little Rock; when I first came up here after Katrina drove me out of the New Orleans area, the house we rented did not have internet hookup -- though it was coming within a month -- so I looked into it. Absolutely every person I talked to in the area said to avoid Hughesnet like it was the plague (wasn't it called BlueSky or something else previously?). Terrible service, terrible connectivity, terrible terms -- including a laughably low data plan.

Sorry to see Starlink having supply issues -- there's a good subreddit for Starlink here. Though not everything is beer & skittles, most comments are very positive.

I just read that my electric coop is adding fiber lines throughout the region. I'm not sure where my neighborhood is on the rollout list but I'll definitely look at it as an option; better than nothing but I have Comcast/Xfinity, whose service is really good but their pricing is terrible.

Is T-Mobile or Verizon available? I'm reading pretty good reports from the $50 a month T-Mobile; I haven't seen much about the Verizon offer.

After you finally get Starlink, after about an hour you'll forget all about how long the wait was, and you'll forget all about the $499 startup costs.

It's been faster and more reliable than the cable it replaced.

Starlink has had trouble building satellites because of the chip shortage (but, they do have several loads of of them ready to launch... they just had to build them slower).
The shortages have REALLY impacted the receivers. Apparently, the new "square" dishes use fewer chips, but, they're still having trouble making 'em fast enough.

I feel fortunate to live in town where I have options. I don't like the prices, but at least I have options.

Comcrap, AT&T U-Verse and Metronet fiber are available. I doubt U-Verse is available to new customers but I've had it for years.

Neither T-Mobile nor Verizon home internet are available at my address. My family and I were all on T-Mobile until Hurricane Ida, when we all lost service. LTE was slow. We switched to AT&T and data rates & cell service is much better. There’s an AT&T tower about a mile from the house . My son in law was already on AT&T and he was getting 30 Mbps on his iPhone 13.

If you have good LTE or 5G then just get a Jetpack or a Cradlepoint router. Probably cheaper than Starlink.

My backup/travel internet is an unlimited 4G 'tablet' plan on AT&T.

Set it up on a tablet, then removed the SIM & placed into an unlocked hotspot.
