Which MacBook Pro? 14 or 16 inch?

My venerable MacBook Pro from 2008 with the Core 2 Duo, 4GB of ram, and a 256MB hard drive has done its duty with flying colors for 13 years. I'm going to pass it along to an elderly neighbor who has some horrible Windows laptop filled with various types of 'wares that make it useless. This MBP will seem like a new computer to her.

Anyway, work gave us $2000 in Amazon gift cards Right now Amazon has the 16 inch with 16gb ram, a 512gb drive, and the M1 Pro 10 core/16 core gpu for $2499

or

the 14 inch with 16gb ram, 1TB ssd, and the M1Pro 10 core/16 core GPU.

I'm leaning towards the 14 inch for a smaller form factor and the extra hard drive space, but of course the 16 inch version will have better battery life.

What's your preference out of the two?

Both?

I would go for the 16" personally.

If I was traveling with it a lot, I would go for 14".

Yeah, I was going to say BOGO. I think I would need to see them in person to make an educated decision.

I had same choice, went with the 14” for mobility. I’ve used an Intel 16” - it’s just too big for me for travel.

My eyesight dictates the 16”.

14” for mobility and SSD size. 16” for screen, battery life, and sound quality-best sound ever in a laptop, really remarkable.

Do you really need the additional storage? If you have gone all these years with a 256 GB drive, moving to 512 would be double?

How often do you go mobile? That would be the determination for me.

Oh, assuming your old MBP has a SSD in it, correct? If not I’d put in one for him. $40 for a 128 GB. Huge difference in daily performance.

That will be the best $500 computer ever!

I wasn’t a fan of the vents on the side of the 16 inch when I held it at Best Buy.

But I’d still buy one in a second.

Out of curiosity— in what way? Like hard to hold? Or ?

14 or 16 is the question for me, too. I'd like to save the few hundred on the smaller screen, but...

While I like portability, 90% of my use is on the couch or at a desk. My 15" MBPr is portable enough when it needs to be.

And the 15" screen on this MBPr....man, I really hate to give that up. I've used 14" and smaller laptops from time to time, and it's just not the same. I do some gaming and watching streams, but I also edit photos on this thing, and was making iMovies quite a bit during COVID. Screen real estate is very appreciated there.

This decision is killing me too. I've yet to make it to an Apple Store to view them in person, but I've read, heard and watched many reviews and reactions, and I'm still going back and forth. There really are tremendous arguments for both.

As a couple of MRFers have said in the past, the Max Tech guys are kind of over the top. But even though these guys are over-caffeinated, and their titles are kind of click-baity, they usually do a good job of highlighting things potential users will want to know. Even though the title suggests otherwise, this video makes a strong case for both models, and may help you decide...or perhaps as in my case, muddle things even more:

[youtu.be]

I hope to replace my late 2013 15" MBP with one of these at some point. For the last few years, my wife and kids have all had 13" MBPs and MBA's, and I'm pretty jealous of how light and portable they are. Not that I travel a ton with my computer, but even around the house, I'm more likely to dock it to an external monitor than carry it around with me.

I had pretty much made up may mind on the 14" before they were announced, but I've gradually shifted towards the 16". In the past, some of the arguments against the 16" are kind of flipped because of bigger battery and more efficient cooling. Also, I've been using my 15" undocked more in recent weeks, and I'm starting to think I'll miss the extra screen real estate.

Then there's the above video which raises a pretty valid concern that has me rethinking everything yet again.

I also thought about the 16, but as stated above..."even around the house" I like the portability of the 14. I may order a 16/1tb tonight...need to figure out the best deal.

I bit on the Adorama deal via your post. $300 off a 16inch 16/512, $2199. Backordered, though even Apple.com is showing 2-3 weeks out. On the upside I can cancel if a better deal pops in the meantime.
