So as I shoot more and more of the artifacts I posted about a few days ago-

-I'm noticing a recurrence of some reddish colored "bubbly" stuff as part of the rock used to make the artifacts. Here are some samples...

And the artifacts with this material as part of their makeup. It is rock and not something "growing" on them...







It definitely seems that the stone used is different so this reddish material doesn't seem to be associated with a certain type of stone/rock.

What say the forum geologists?

Looks like lichen.

Iron oxide inclusions in the agate from which the arrowheads were made is my guess.

In the photos it kind of does. Looks-wise it reminds of a lichen I've seen growing on rocks in the desert that is vividly chartreuse in the spring and turns bright orange as the weather cools in the fall. I have no idea what it's official name is, I just call it Day-Glo Lichen.

There is something that color on certain trees here in south Arkansas. I think I read it was a fungus.

Yep. Fungus. But my trees don’t get that bad, but look more like the rock pictures.

This is not plant matter; it is rock so I'm going with iron oxide.

There is a lot of "rust" in the groundwater of Southern lower MI. Everyone with a well has to have a softener!
