75% of the icons just disappeared from my desktop

Last gen intel Mini running Big Sur 11.6.1

MalwareBytes scan is clean

I guess Disk Utility next.

This is not good

assuming a restart has happened. maybe u dragged them all into another folder?

Search for the name of one of the missing folders on the rest of your drives

malwarebytes is always a waste of time. this is not a disk problem...

there are no folders on the desktop. I think there used to be one or two

I searched for a known file, and it showed up and appeared on the desktop. So did another random item.

Could have been a Finder crash.

Or maybe you accidentally enabled stacks in Big Sur?
