Fixing an avi file?

I have an avi file that won't play properly. On my iMac using vnc I get the big color chunks for the first few minutes of the video and then it smooths out for the rest of the 40 min tv episode. On my AppleTV it only shows 13 minutes of video. I tried running the avi file thru handbrake but it errors out. iFlicks produces a file but it doesn't play. Any other suggestions?

If you are running an older OS, you could try DivFix++.

[sourceforge.net]

It's old, but it works... But no way will it run under Catalina, Big Sur, Monterey.

Maybe try IINA player? I use it 99% of the time now, unless I need the adjustable playback speed in VLC. I find a lot of dramas are far more watchable at +8% faster.

I am extremely impressed with DivFix++. I had hoped for a playable file with noticeable glitches but it appears to have completely fixed the file so it plays correctly. Thank you Sarcany for that suggestion!

I’ve found that running a bothersome video file through MKVToolNix and then repackaging the resulting .mkv into a .m4v (or .mov) repairs the vast majority of issues.
