I just tried it with an ATV4 and ATV6 - works just fine

I thought Apple discontinued support for the ATV3 last year.

Screen Mirroring shows up in my Menu Bar. It's the icon with two sliders stacked (just to the left of the Siri icon). When clicked, screen mirroring is the second box down on the right.

I know about the two sliders go to screen mirroring thing - that's how I get to Display Preferences to the "Add Display" button at the bottom left. When I click on that I see my Roku but the Apple TV does not show up to be added. Maybe Forrest is right that Apple TV 3rd Generation is no longer supported for mirroring.

I'm going to change the thread title because I just realized that my Apple TV remote isn't working - probably because the battery is dead - and I can't find my recharging cable for it (or any that will fit). So the question I asked in the OP is moot.

The silver ATV3 remote takes a CR2032 battery. The ATV4 and newer remotes are recharged with a Lightning cable

Ack! Thanks. I changed it in that post because once you pointed it out it bugged me so much I didn't want to leave it in.
