under-desk exercisers

I really need to do something to get in better shape a little healthier and help my legs and knees. I'll walk in the nicer weather, but until then I'm looking for a simple solution. We thought of a treadmill, but can't afford the good ones and for space reasons would need something that folds out of the way when not in use anyway. No real room to use a stationary bike, either. So I'm thinking of one of those cycle-type things for under my desk while working from home. Problem is, I know I'll probably whack my knees actually trying to use it under a desk.

So question #1 is whether anywhere here has experience with something like that and whether you have a strong recommendation.

Question #2 is what you think of these two options I'm considering.

Squats are remarkably effective and efficient leg workouts:

I'm not sure how your first link is an under the desk solution when the pictures indicate the model is using it standing up. Seems like it would be tough to operate it without foot straps to keep everything in place during the cycling motion.

Maybe a compact stair climber. They don't take up much room and give a good aerobic workout.

Definitely look for used no matter what you decide upon. Most have barely been used other than as a clothes rack.

I had a under-desk pedal-machine.

The intention was not just to use it while at the desk, but also while sitting at the couch, etc.

I found it annoying and didn't use it much. It didn't have enough resistance and the angles were all wrong to feel comfortable with it.

Eventually gave it away.

Thanks, all.

Yes, I know squats are effective, but I can't do them while sitting at a desk, and there's very little aerobic benefit for the amount of time my knees could do them.

pRICE cUBE, the standing aspect is an option, but the first video in the listing shows her using it while sitting on a couch. And the max height of the knee doesn't seem as high as with more conventional cycling devices.

Compact stair climber could be another option for workout, but not for under a desk.

I find it hard to believe these devices would give any appreciable aerobic workout.

They might help keep you awake, something akin to getting up an walking around.

Maybe during a break, one could concentrate on some fast pedaling for 5-15min or so, more depending on if breaks are monitored or one is working from home.

I wouldn't use foot straps while standing, but I'd definitely want them for use while seated.

This allows one to pull up as well as push down, exercising more muscles and possibly increasing aerobic benefit.

A device that allowed far more extension and contraction of the legs combined with a desk having no modesty panel could be a benefit.

I have no idea of there's such an off the shelf solution.
