Tech question re Thunderbolt Hub/Dock Power Supply
Posted by: MrNoBody

So I've noticed TB docks like the OWC & Sonnet support 'laptop charging'
but require 20VDC/180Watt (9A) adapters like this OWC.

If one only uses the 'dock' for TB devices (SSD/NVMe) and USB-C data, is
such a massive PS actually needed?
OWC offers a 110W (20v/5.5a) Thunderbolt 4 Hub PS for a lot less.

I'm guessing a 20V 40-50W supply would suffice dunno smiley

Yeah makes sense to me.

I have to say it's quite convenient though for me to plug my 16" MBP into just one cable going to a powered dock. Have not even taken the MBP external power adapter out of the box.

Do you already own the dock?

Does it need to be Thunderbolt? or would a non Tbolt dock be ok? with pass thru power?

No it's just my curiosity whether a TB3 hub really needs external power for
TB & USB devices (5vdc) & HDMI output if no charging is required.

I'm awaiting a reply from Sonnet tech support but the interwebs seem
to surmise external power is not required.
My current 10Gbps SSK 5-in-1 USB-C 3.2 hub uses only the power from
the host Mini M1. USB-C NVMe/SSDs & the HDMI port all work fine.
edit:
UPDATE- Sonnet tech support replied "should work OK" but they can't
'officially' endorse it. iow, it's a CYA reply for which I don't blame them.
