Yup... some time in June.
Several hurdles passed, many yet to go, in the unfurling and calibration process.
A youtube video about the Webb said it had 350 "single point failure" components. That is, at any one of those 350 steps, or processes, or moving parts, if it failed - the whole mission was done.
I'd love to know how many of those points have passed, vs how many are to come.

Damn.. if I was on that project I would be having continuous nightmares. I still have bad dreams about a failed anti tank missile test once in Nevada. We came within 1 meter of killing a civilian driving offrange when the missile went rogue after the wires broke. RSO went off, and threatened to beat up the project manager if he forced him to NOT shut down the road again.

Did you ever work with Destin Sandlin? Sounds like your roles overlapped quite a bit.

If the Range Safety Officer didn't have control over whether the road was closed, if I was the RSO, I'd have quit on the spot, AFTER jotting down a note and presenting it in front of witnesses that this was an unsafe test and handing it to the guy in charge....

And yeah, I think the Webb team probably all have bleeding ulcers at this point.

FWIW that story was from the early 1980's at a private test range in Nevada. The RSO belonged to the range, and SHOULD have shut it down. The project manager was an idiot and guaranteed safety.

There were some high level safety meetings/beatings that us range rats didn't attend later that day. Most of the team just went to the casino and drank. I went for a drive and a hike in the desert.

They finished tensioning the sun shield early. Everything worked and went so smoothly they got it done early. A whole bunch of those single point failures worked perfectly.

Quote

The unfolding and tensioning of the sunshield involved 139 of Webb’s 178 release mechanisms, 70 hinge assemblies, eight deployment motors, roughly 400 pulleys, and 90 individual cables totaling roughly one quarter of a mile in length. The team also paused deployment operations for a day to work on optimizing Webb’s power systems and tensioning motors, to ensure Webb was in prime condition before beginning the major work of sunshield tensioning.

I can’t wait.

You do realize most of the photos will be of things that happened millions, if not billions, of years ago. You’ve already missed the boat.

And when a 22 year old stripper goes home with you... do you care that you're not the first guy she's been to bed with?
No.. you enjoy the experience of it being the first time YOU'VE been to bed with her*.

*ignore the burning sensation a few days later... it's nothing, it'll go away on it's own...
