Rooting around looking for a power supply I spot the case; my old
Dell Mini-9 'Atom' netbook. 1.6GHz, 2GB DDR2 533M, a whopping
16GB SSD, & GMA950 GPU.
Booted right up into Snow Leopard & fortunately I remembered the log-in.
Date & Time were still correct, now to see if the old Li-Ion battery will hold a charge.
wow, 12-year old tech still works

I didn't remember that it was ever capable of going past 10.5. That's what mine was running. I gave it to my BIL many years ago, and he used it until about 2 years ago, when he started using my sister's old Macbook, which I think he still uses. He gave up on the mini because of browser issues. We had the latest possible version of Firefox on it, but he was still having issues.

I still use mine very infrequently to update my Logitech remotes.

I have never been able to get a new* Mac to recognize them.

* New = anything after my 2007 SR MBPro.

Mine is still going fine! But what i was using it for now is seeming not to work anymore. I was using it as a digital wallet-I'd download images to it when on location but now it doesn't recognize newer SD cards. Or maybe the SD card slot isn't working anymore...

just booted mine up a few weeks ago - still working fine; if it could run a modern browser, it'd probably still be my laptop to take along when travelling.

After two hours it's gone from 0% to 99% charge.
Now to figure how an appropriate test of its battery run time.
Any suggestions?

Wow, I'm amazed they still work. I always wanted to get one but you mush understand my level of cheapness that I didn't even buy one of those to Hackintosh, much less a real MacBook/Pro

Which explains a bit why my newest laptop is 7 years old...

Maybe leave it on a webpage with a lot of ad banners to keep the CPU a little busy? One thing I've noticed with batteries that sit unused a long time is the first runtime after not using it for a long time is very short, but the second runtime after another charge is quite a bit better.

SETI@Home! That would be sure to kill it ASAP.

After full charge, unplugged & booted to OS X. Launched Activity Monitor
disabled all energy saving options including the display off timer.
It ran for Four Hours before the low battery warning popped up!
Shut down & plugged in charger, took approx. 3-hours to reach full charge again.
Think I'll do one more test-recharge cycle before it goes back in storage.

Looks like your battery is good.

My Mini 9 was the best value in computing I've ever seen. I used it on the daily until I got an iPad.

As I recall the problems towards the end of the Mini's utility to me were related to the lack of quality compatible replacement batteries. There were a lot of cheap batteries floating around out there and at some point all of them messed with, or were not compatible with, the Mini 9 firmware settings.

It took the iPad ecosystem a long time to catch up to the capabilities of the Mini 9 with full MacOS. (It's still very difficult to work with network files on an iPad the way MacOS does, and the Mini's quirky but highly usable keyboard was extremely practical.) The cell data and very long battery life were the iPad's killer features vs. the Mini.

I bought a pink one for my wife. She handed it down to my daughter who used it until the novelty wore off. It's still in a box in the basement with other outdated, discarded tech. Anyone want it, let me know.

Final Update:
Ran it down again, Recharged overnight from < 15% while I slept.
Booted up & played 2hr MP4 Video (720x480) full screen. Took another
1.5hrs of on time before the low batt. warning popped up.
Recharged to 100% in < 3hrs. I am ranking the battery as VG+.

Mini-9 is back in it's case & on the closet shelf.
