Recently widowed neighbor wants me to fix her Macbook Pro 15

It's very very slow. I did a new admin account and it is still very slow.

Might anyone know what OS this beauty would run if I did a nuke and pave?

Ordering a replacement battery from OWC now.

That's a FINE 2012 top of the line model

it should not be slow - replace the hard drive and install an OS - Catalina is the last one it can run officially.

PS: check the drive with SMART Utility

Yes, the great last unibody before Retina. First with USB3. As Hal said, can handle Catalina...with an SSD. Can handle 16Gb of RAM.

My beloved spouse still uses this as her daily driver, on Mojave.

Opening to replace battery, RAM, drive is no big deal.

You have a highly desirable mid 2012 MacBookPro with the upgraded i7 CPU. This is the last MBP that’s easily upgradeable. If i’s slow, it’s probably the hard drive. The 500 GB, 5400 rpm spinner may be on it’s last legs. You may want install a 2.5 inch SSD for better performance. I would install OSX 10.14 Mojave because of 32 bit compatibility.

Assuming it's not Retina and has a replaceable spinny hard drive, put in an SSD.

ALso, how full is the HD/SSD?

Sudden motion sensor enabled suggests it's a spinny drive.

Backup that drive immediately.
Then see about getting an SSD in there...

Then update to Catalina, import from the backup.
Boom... almost like a new one!

Can’t stress enough upgrading to an SSD. It made our 2009 C2D MB eminently useable.

New SSD first!

Then, optionally, 8GB of memory is good; wouldn't hurt to bump it to 16GB down the road. Not necessary, though.

Well, ok. I almost told her to recycle it but glad I didn't.

It is a conventional hard drive. I'll see if she has dough for a new SSD. She had to think about the $89 battery from OWC.

I tried to just run app store app but it says it cant connect. It will get online with a browser.

Is there a simple link to download and install Mojave? On Safari it simply won't load the page from a google link. I installed Chrome and tried again the page loads but no download button.

Thanks much.

Not really.
Also, reasonably certain my wife would not approve

Yes! Backup drive, clone to that Crucial. Revel in the ease of replacing that drive with the SSD in a modular Mac.

That's a real gem of a computer.

Before going to Catalina, look at System Info/Software and see how many 32 bit apps are on there. If there are any important ones, only upgrade to Mojave, not Catalina. Go here for older MacOS versions: [support.apple.com]

Upgrade the SSD, don't worry about the RAM. I'd take the OS to Mojave unless she has 32-bit programs that can't be upgraded, in that case stop at High Sierra

But check the keyboard first, go through every key, both upper and lowercase. The keyboard going bad was the death of both my mid-2012's. The other weak point is the Hard Drive Cable [www.ifixit.com]

Yes, use davester’s link. Generally I would max out the memory while I had the back off, but 8 gigs is fine; absolutely do the SSD.

I have a 9,1. I'm typing on it right now.

When I got it, I was disappointed with it. I replaced the HD with a SSD. It screamed.

Still going strong.

Slap in the SSD and will feel new!

I cleared everything off the other user/her account. She says she doesn't use the Macbook for anything but "internet".

I am signed into icloud on the pref panel.

I'm trying to sign into the App store to try and download a newer OS but I get a spinning beach ball when doing so in the App Store app.

Restart/sign out/sign in repeat no joy.

Is there any way to get an installer on a thumb drive or anything?

I can access app store on "my" computer and my phone, oddly.

Keyboard works and seems quite nice. In fact the whole computer seems very nice.

Yes, then download it on your Mac if you can. The quickest way to install it might be TDM:

what they all said.

Does she really need a battery? how often does she go mobile? maybe just treat as a desktop? Save the $$.

I installed Chrome

Chrome is part of the reason it's slow.

It was slow before I put Chrome on it. It took a good two minutes for Safari to load.

I'd pass on the additional RAM.

I'd do an Apple Hardware Test if possible.

I'd consider installing Firefox as a second browser for those times when Safari won't work.

But the almost daily updates may trouble her.

Between Sierra and High Sierra, there were still random sites that didn't like an older flavor of Safari.

To startup the MacBook in recovery mode to run diagnostics, run Disk Utility Or reinstall an OS, you’ll need an internet connection. Check this Apple Support for more info
