WWYD -- old iMacs, try to sell, or e-waste?
Posted by: jdc
Date: January 08, 2022 02:04PM
Trying to do some spring cleaning -- and I have a stack of iMacs I haven't used in years. They all run as far as I know.

If I were to sell, I prob need to go thru and erase drives, which means booting and checking each one. pfft. Or I could just e-waste. (Does anyone know if apple or BB will take them?)

iLamp 15", white 2006 20", AL 2007 24", 2008 20", and 2010 27".

None have USB 3, so that's a negative. The 2010 has a SSD, but power supply runs really hot, so also a negative. Of course no modern OS.

thoughts?

You trust some random Best Buy worker to not root through them? You should wipe them regardless.

I suppose for peace of mind you could take the time to remove the hard drives and then e-waste the remains. Then you could just de-mag, destroy or erase the drives at your leisure.

Offer to donate to some kid or family center (after wiping the drives and reinstalling an OS). I they won't take them, then e-waste.

yeah, tried years ago -- due to them being Macs, and not being to run latest OS / Security (pffft), I kinda found this a no-go. They didn't want them.

I mean they "work" just not as good a modern iron. even a Chromebook might be speedier for basic tasks.

Ever thought of loading one of those up with photos and let it run the photo screensaver? I find that it adds to the atmosphere of a room.

Not sure how Reddit works but I've seen some guys go GAGA over some plain "trash" Macs like I have sitting in my basement in the Reddit Vintage Apple area.

Not sure if you can buy or sell there, but guys get excited over a fruit variety iMac that was sitting out on a roof in the rain like an occasional Thrift Store Score here.

There is also the Low End Mac Swap list It's a google group so I can't remember how to join or opt in

Anyway, If either of these work - report back and let us know, i have some things to sell rather than going to the curb on bulk day.

Wife would never go for it =)

The iLamp would be great... lost the special power cord Ken SP gave me. =(

Just realized there might be a 2012 21.5" somewhere. Drive is dead. But has USB 3.

With a wife and a small gaggle of kids, all Mac folks, I got used to getting ‘em sold while there was still some interest on eBay. Don’t know how many we went thru.

A couple got survived for various reasons. My IIci, for sentimentality; the lime lollipop iMac DV, probably the same reason.

I need a 27" mid-2010 LCD panel. Mine has dark steaks in it. I've posted about a few times. Any chance you have a good one or do want to leave them together? I would be interested either way.

If all else fails an Apple Store will take Apple products in for recycling. I dropped off an old mini, an old MBA, and various cables just a few weeks ago. no appointment necessary.

You might check online for Apple's recycling program and see if they will ship you boxes and prepaid labeling.

I had a 2009 iMac collecting dust for the last year. I tried to sell it on Craigslist but no takers. I dropped it off last week with a bunch of other stuff for an end of the year thrift store donation.

I just reloaded OS on an iMac (CRT), eMac, and white iMac (2007) plus a bunch of old laptops (MacBooks, powerbook) and dropped them off at the local thrift shop.

This. Working iLamps are easily going for $150+ on eBay.

I have a 17” iLamp and a 2006 24” that are both used as digital picture frames, they both get lots of comments and complements from visitors to my home. Next time I have a free day to goof around I’m setting up one of my cubes with an ACD for the same duty.

My wife still uses her 27" 2010 iMac. She's hoping the new iMacs are at least 27". She doesn't want to go down to 24". If/when she gets a new one, the old one will go in her sewing room to watch videos.

Me too rz -- went from my 2.93 i7 2010 to a 3.5 i5 2014 and it seemed like barely a blip. 2014 had the 5K screen and USB 3, but in the grand scheme of things, meh. I prob should have saved my $ and kept using the 2010. No way I would go the 24 either, really hoping the 27" is 30". =) And I need more power than the M1 for the adobe suite.

thanks all.

someone took one (thanks!) -- wasnt really my intent to try and sell, was mostly curious if anyone thought there was value...

Im hesitant on selling the ilamp, since I don't have a power cord... I dunno whats on it. Was my moms mac.... maybe I will bust the bottom off and pull the drive.

I think this may be the power cord you need:

Selling on Craigslist is one thing but giving away is another. Usually someone will take a freebie.

I do this, runs 24/7 in our basement. You see it on the way to the Laundry room and beer fridge.
Lots of older photos, that wouldn't easily been seen otherwise.

Typically I borrow my son's handgun, shoot through the hard drive then recycle the computer.

A similar effect can be achieved with a screwdriver, but I really don’t understand destroying the drive. Erasing it is sufficient.

Fwiw, the alu iMacs use a hefty amount of electricity, when on, so I'd think twice about just using it as a photo frame (although it does have a gorgeous screen).

Hurts like a bastid...
