Can I get Catalina downloaded without jumping thru all these hoops?

So I am coming into the 21st Century only because of needing to update some apps that won't work on anything lower than Catalina. And getting some help from other forum members, I find that on my old iMac I can't update higher than Catalina. I am at 10.14.6 loaded on an SSD from our sponsor but I want it on an external. I have a SanDisk 500GB SSD as an external but it is redundant so I erased it and am now trying to load Catalina on it.

So I go to Apple and get the 10.15.7 Combo Update but it says I need 10.15 before I can load .7. OK, I search for 10.15 but all that shows is 10.15.1 and up.

Do I use 10.15.1 or is there a 10.15.0?

Oh, and the link I find that says "download 10.15" takes me to the download for 10.15.7! banghead smiley

scroll down that page. under the "Use Safari to download macOS on your Mac" heading. what do you see there? following that link opens up the App Store where I can download it.

When I click on that, it takes me to this:

The background window you see is what pops up. I click on Get. The Finding Update bar goes across and then the "Are you sure you want to download macOS Catalina 10.15.7?" window pops up.

You said that you have a Late 2012 iMac?

Should be able to get it for a Late 2012 iMac running 10.14...

I can't seem to even find a 10.15 download...

The one that you get from the Software Update panel in the System Preferences is the full-installer. The link to the App Store will -- as you observed -- open the Software Update panel to download the installer.

If you successfully download the installer from the Software Update panel, it will open an installer window. From there, you can select the drive that you want to install it on and do the install.

If you quit the installer, it will leave the "Install macOS Catalina" app in your Applications folder for you to use whenever you feel like it.

OK, success! Just following thru from the Software Update window did the trick.

It's just me I guess but I started by going to Apple Support and searching for the Catalina Download which is how the confusion started. When I downloaded the .dmg's for 10.15.7 and back to 10.15.1 and opened them, and got the "you need 10.15 before using the others" and then saw the 10.15.7 in Software Update, well...

But, again, thx for all the help and will get Catalina set up and then I'll fiddle-fart with it later!
