Anyone purchase spices from Spiceology (or another online spice supplier)?

I'm thinking of doing a full purge of our outdated / old spices and replacing them with Spiceology or another online spice supplier. Does anyone purchase spices from any of these shops? Worth it?

[oaktownspiceshop.com] is damn good but I shop from [www.penzeys.com] more frequently because they're local.

We've been happy with Penzey's quality. Plus they run deals and promotions pretty much every week or so.

Another Penzey's customer.

We love Penzy's, both their spices and their politics and values (will not elaborate to keep this from getting this bumped to the other side).

Aren't there any ethnic markets near you? Their spices often have good turnover and are priced moderately.

Good question... I'll ask around (locally).

Spacescape,

I have a couple of favorite brands, which I'll list below. One thing I do is avoid buying spices in bulk. I usually buy a year or two years worth of a given spice at a time. That way, it's always pretty fresh.

Seems the general rule is that quality vanilla extract and salt have a very long shelf life. Near indefinite. Other extracts not so much. Some are only good for up to two or three years.

Whole spices such as peppercorns can be good for 3 to 4 years.

Ground spices like chili powder are good for up to 2 to 4 years or so.

Ground and whole leafy herbs are good for about 1 to 3 years or so.

'course, all of the above depends on how you store them. As some spices age, they don't go bad per se. They just become less potent and you'll need to use that much more of it to achieve the same result. Rather just replace an aging herb/spice/etc than use one that has aged too much.

For vendors, I'm a fan of spices from Frontier Food Coop. They sell them under their own name as well as under Simply Organic. Very good spices.

I also like Penzey's spices.

I've heard good things about The Spice House. From what I understand, after the owner of Penzey's passed away, his heirs divided the company. The Spice House is owned by them.

La Boite came recommended to me but I haven't gotten anything from them yet.

Burlap & Barrel

[www.burlapandbarrel.com];

Same as La Boite. Recommended to me but haven't tried their spices yet.

Spicewalla

Same as La Boite. Recommended to me but haven't tried their spices yet.

Thanks, Robert M, I was going to mention Frontier because I'll grab them sometimes when I only need a small amount of a one-off spice for a dish. Also, I did not know that they do Simply Organic! This is my grocery store pick (due to quality) if I end up with a spice on my shopping list.

La Boite is excellent, but on the pricier side.
