I am slightly weirded out by the OWC message on this page regarding the MBP 9,1. Anybody done one and had it work?

Yes, but it was a long time ago and I believed I followed the 3G advice for the optical bay (I had an OWC 1TB SSD that was 3G at the time).

don't worry about that 'warning' - it's just saying that the datadoubler won't allow drives to run at SATA3 standard (6gb/s) and will run at only SATAII standard (500mb/s), so you want to put your SSD boot drive in the original hard drive bay and put a secondary drive in the datadoubler. That slower standard is still almost fast enough to take full advantage of your SSD speed, but maybe not quite...

I installed this on my MacBook Pro 9,1 (13-inch) a number of years ago. Great addition. I also bought the enclosure for the SuperDrive which I removed. I can't find the link on the OWC page, however.

I guess I don't understand what they mean by 3G and 6G. I assumed it was drive size? I intend to put an SD drive where the hard drive is now and the original hard drive in the CD/DVD space with the data doubler dealy.

My neighbor gave me this Macbook for those that remember the original message.

I would’t worry too much about the original drive, small, old, and slow. An external USB enclosure would be a more versatile setup.

How much space do you need and how much (or little) do you want to spend?

"Data Doublers" really had their heyday back when SSD's were expensive and small in capacity.

So, you could have a 128GB or 256GB boot SSD and up to 2TB of storage space in a hard drive.

But, nowadays, 9.5mm tall hard drives are still stuck at 2TB but you can get up to 8TB in an SSD. So, the need of having a small SSD and larger hard drive are actually gone. You can just buy the SSD capacity you need to cover it all (assuming that's in the budget).

the 2012 MacBook Pro 9.1 are pretty desirable in mobile and club DJ circles for the ability to upgrade. The thing is with music being downloaded or streamed now vs on a CD, most guys opt to pull the CD or Superdrive and put the secondary hard drive the bay for more room for music or music video.

If not downloaded. music is delivered hand to hand on a USB stick or a Flash drive rather than a CD, but many (like me) have a external USB superdrive around for burning or importing CDs.

My current MBP is late 2011 (8.2) 1TB SSD with another 1TB SSD data doubler in the Optibay

I'm glad that you fellows told me what a gem this unit is. I really like the keyboard. Thus far I have ordered an SD drive, new battery from OWC and now the data doubler. I can't remember the last time I used a DVD.
