Ignore the QLC. Nothing to see here, move along!

jdc,

Very tempting! Might by two of the Inland Premium or Inland Professional models as an upgrade to the frankendrives I'm using as a boot drive and a clone of the boot drive for one of my machines where a 1TB model is getting a bit to shace shy for my taste.

No issues at all with the Inland Premium NVME sticks and 2.5" form factor models I've used over the years. Rock solid. Would definitely buy higher or lower capacity versions without hesitation.

Robert

Absolutely nothing wrong with QLC drives, they even have advantages over TLC in some areas.

I've had zero issues with my Inland NVMe's.
iirc, they're actually made by Avant Technology (Mushkin), a supplier
to Apple, Dell, H-P, & others. Also, they're US based.

Outside of price, name an advantage.

Is lack of durability and cheaper construction an advantage?

Is the higher failure rate an advantage?

Is slowing down to HD speeds on large write-operations an advantage?

Is the way that they break the RAID when one tries to RAID them an advantage?

As a bulk data drive that has a primarily WORM (write once, read many) usage pattern, QLC is usable and if notably cheaper, can be fine to use.

However as a Boot drive or one that will get frequent updates, especially to large files, unless it has an excellent caching mechanism (read multiple reviews to make sure), it will work like a hard drive.

I have one in a Win 10 PC and it sucks. Real bad. I hate it. I have some almost 10 year old Sandforce SSDs which perform... like an SSD! Unlike this thing.

Don't do QLC unless you're going WORM or you do some good research about the drive's performance.

But isn't that a design feature of a Microsoft OS, it just sucks?
I wouldn't blame the peecee hardware!

Well yes, there is that detail, however I'm using an almost exact equivalent PC right now with a TLC SSD and in terms of speed, I have zero complaints.

So how would the Performance and Professional NVMe SSDs perform in an M1 Mac?

I mentioned in another post that a portable SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable NVMe fared poorly on my M1 MBA.

It was also slower than the internal SSD on my 2018 mini.

What The Fork!

This seems to be a known problem, though not admitted/mentioned by Apple.

I want a 2T NVMe, but don't want to fork out ~$200 for a drive and ~$100 for an enclosure and not see at least >2000-2500Mbps.

I don't care that Mail or Safari won't open any faster, I want to see speeds significantly north of 1000Mbps, on a drive other than an Apple internal SSD, even if it's only with Blackmagic Speed Disk Speed Test.

Most all 2TB NVMes are near $200...

You would need a $150 enclosure. OWCs $80 one is 1500 MB/s.

There are some issues with M1s and TBolt ports, which can be bypassed with some hubs> My memory is foggy on it.

The advantage of the Performance here, is that it gives you future proofing-I can see enclosures in a couple of years that would give you the speed. And if I'm buying a 2TB SSD, I'll probably still have the 2TB.
