Well this sucks...Pantone libraries leaving Adobe CC Apps.

Just saw this in a Creative Pro email, they're moving to a third party add-on that you pay Pantone for.

Haven't read the entire article yet...

My take always from the article:

“Pantone was unable to actively update the library to correct any changes to the color data or to update it with new colors,” Cheng told CreativePro. “We had to find a way to address user problems regarding these outdated libraries.”

Uh, sure. I can’t think of any better way to “address user problems” than to impose a subscription-based plugin.

“…Cheng said that Pantone continues to license up-to-date Pantone color data to Serif (for its Affinity suite of applications), to Quark, and to Corel, as well as to “Pantone’s many other software partners.”…”

Time to pick up Serif apps if you haven’t already done so.

“… Users on professional online forums say it’s fair game for designers to back up color data files and to be poised to restore them to the proper folders should future releases remove the digital assets.

All color libraries for the programs—not just from Pantone, but from other vendors like Trumatch and Toyo—are saved as Adobe Color Book (ACB) files in a folder of varying names within the Presets folder in each respective application. While users hardly ever find themselves accessing such configuration files, these digital resources are within easy reach.…”

Probably a good idea to save the current ACB files for now.

$5 a month (if paid annually) is like 2 cups of coffee. But hey I'm not in favor of it, I mean, $5 is $5.

Meh. Pantone matching seems like a niche thing anymore.

Seems like a weird flex to use a specific pantone... unless its maybe a metallic or neon color.

Zero consumers give 2 shakes of a stick if the blue of the ATT logo were a slightly different shade.

ATT absolutely cares if you put their logo in the wrong color. Designers clients are the businesses, not the businesses customers. I've seen auto manufacturers refuse to pay their ad sharing costs because a wrong color shade was used in an ad.

Ita all ego. And impossible to match a pantone in a magazine ad.

Not gonna split hairs on it, I've created a dozen branding guidelines in my day, and get them from companies often.

To your example, yep, 100%. But you can get a CMYK close. If its off, then its off, and I wouldn't pay either.

We're a specialty printer that uses almost only PMS colors on our single color presses.
(single color, Heidelberg Cylinder Letterpress beasts from the 1950's / 60's)

So I guess we'll be ponying up for 10 or so PMS subscriptions.

We maybe farm out 3 jobs a year in process.

More Fun Times in printing.

Ugh... corporate color schemes are often trademarked. My company has our own Pantone color.

Everyone wants to go subscription. It's an income stream.

that's awesome. I used one in high school, along with an actual hot metal machine and manual letter press machines.

Niche.

I’d say at least 98% of the companies or corporations I worked with during my design career probably thought Pantone was that tall Italian cake you find in supermarkets around Christmas time.

Even more misinterpretation when you refer to it as PMS.

I do love their line of Pantone mugs and umbrellas.
But I won't be purchasing one now out of spite.
