That is very hopeful.... I have a cousin with MS.
But I expect any treatment will be decades in the making.

But do we know the long-term effects of this vaccine?

It probably makes you sterile!

( i’m kidding, of course. This is awesome.)

Wow, that's super big news! Reminds me of when they came out with H. pylori being a leading cause of stomach ulcers. Tons of data raking and then carefully designed tests to figure these things out.

I lost my wife because of MS. There have been so many false starts, then and now. I hope this one is better than all the others.

Nevertheless, there is still a lot of work to be done:

1) development of a vaccine, if possible, which will have the long term effect of reducing the incidence of MS and the other autoimmune sequelae of EB virus.

2) elucidating the way in which EB virus provokes an autoimmune response so that MS etc can be treated/prevented in people who have already been infected with EB.

3) because EB is a herpesvirus, it persists in a latent form in the body, so a vaccine that can prevent reactivation of the virus will also need to be developed.

so a vaccine could also be a cure?

Cure is too strong a word. The vaccine would be a preventative.

Once an autoimmune reaction has been triggered, a vaccine against EB would be unlikely to stop it. Other interventions would be required to suppress the autoimmune response. Nevertheless, knowing that EB was the original cause could be very helpful for designing therapies.
