UPS Ground: Still running trucks for cross country?

Curious if anyone knows if UPS Ground still ships small (< 5#) cross country
shipments via tractor-trailer or using transmodal and air?
With the price of fuel, wouldn't air and long distance trucking quickly
consume any profits on 'ground' service.

iirc, years ago a UPS rep told me they load trailers on rail cars and
then send them to various rail centers between West & East coasts.

Transmodal can be uneconomical just in a different way, this from LA: Chicago (for which I have no screen grab) is experiencing similar problems

i texted your question to a friend who is a veteran driver. Her reply: does not matter the size anything that is ground will go via train or truck never on the airplane. Smalls as we call them get packed together in bags while they are on the truck or train but they still are on a truck or train

I'd argue that's not entire true. Probably true in the logical sense. But it is possible to ship "Ground" to Hawaii, and I'm pretty sure UPS isn't running cargo ships across the ocean. I think those "Ground" packages just wait until there's space on an airplane and then get tossed in.

i'll ask her.

Her response: Hawaii, AK, and Catalina Island can all go ground rate but yes, they are the exceptions. I was going to say that earlier but it didn’t seem like the main thrust of the question.

Thanks graylocks! I guessed they'd use rail to truck for c-c. Every big
railyard I've seen has literally dozens of UPS trailers sitting on rail cars.

This was the way in the past. Tracking would show package to be in CA. Then nothing for a week at which point it would reappear in NJ before said package finally reached me in NY.

Of course, if you want to send something to the island the fastest way is to use a flying boat!

UPS drivers are home every night. They hand off a trailer to the next driver who relays it again and again clear across the country.
