Timothy Olyphant Set for Justified Sequel Series Set in Detroit, Inspired by Elmore Leonard's City Primeval

FX is reloading with more Justified, by way of a follow-up series again starring Timothy Olyphant.

The cabler announced on Friday that Olyphant will reprise his role of U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens for Justified: City Primeval, a limited series inspired by the late Elmore Leonard’s crime novel City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit.

The original Justified series debuted on FX in March 2010 and ran for six seasons. Since wrapping his original stint as Raylan, Olyphant’s TV credits have included Santa Clarita Diet, Season 4 of FX’s Fargo, The Mandalorian, The Grinder.

At the moment, this appears to be a mini-series, but I'll take it.

Justified is one of my all-time favorite shows, and Olyphant was terrific.

I'm really looking forward to this, and wouldn't mind the show getting a full reboot.

Raylan wasn't in Leonard's City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit so it will be interesting to see how it's been reworked.

I've seen Olyphant on several talk shows and he's a charming, witty guy, but I haven't liked everything he's done.

So a little more Justified is great news.

Dave Andron and Michael Dinner, who were executive producers on the OG Justified, will serve are showrunners, writers and EPs, with Dinner directing. Olyphant will also carry an EP credit, as will previous showrunner Graham Yost (among others.)

Excellent. I don't watch much TV at all, but Justified was one series I thoroughly enjoyed, in large part due to Olyphant.

I am.... of a different mind about this. Justified was also one of my favorite shows ever - it is one of only three TV series for which I own the entire run on Blu-ray.

A few things about this concern me, though:
  1. You can never go home. Most times, you ought not even try.
  2. The episodes of Justified set in Detroit were among my least favorite.
  3. Raylan Givens without Boyd Crowder could be very much like an Oreo cookie without the cream filling - still tasty, but nowhere as good as it could be.
I will remain warily optimistic.

It is what it is.

I am optimistic, and will keep Thomas Wolfe at bay for the moment.

Fair points all, as the original run had a fantastic cast, as well as brilliant guest stars.

We both loved the second season with Margo Martindale as Mags Bennett.

Walton Goggins as Boyd was one of those legendary villians that was also a charismatic bad guy.

The whole ensemble had great chemistry.

But if the writing is good I think Olyphant can carry the ball for all of them.

I do miss all of them and doubt any will be in the new series, so there's that.

But I am a glass half-full kind of guy.

Really enjoyed Justified and I hope they can pull it off without the Boyd character (a dream sequence maybe?). Second bananas are often the keys to a series success, trying to visualize Better Call Saul without Mike (Jonathan Banks).

There's no doubt that the Givens/Crowder dynamic was epic.

I've said before that one can't have a great hero without a great villain, and Crowder was that and then some.

I've seen Goggins in something else much earlier in his career where he came off as a pedestrian psycho.

But he was terrific as Crowder and was — complicated.

And a Tier 1 bad guy.

I like that in a villain.

Heck, I liked Dewey Crow.

Admittedly, getting that magic back with presumably an all new cast, in a 'limited series' will be a challenge.

My glass is still half-full, at least.
