HiFiMan HE-560 V4 Premium Planar Magnetic Headphones – $229

Anybody familiar with these or the brand in general?

I've been wanting to step into the world of planar magnetic cans, and this might be that step.

Not to crazy about the aesthetics, but depending on the sound, it might be worth a try.

I've had the HiFiMan HE400S cans for a few years now and they are my best sounding pair of cans by far. They leak sound like a sieve, which is one reason they sound so good - no backwave canceling to deal with.

You probably need an external headphone amp as these are 50 Ohm cans so a portable device can drive them but they will sound better with dedicated amplification. The 400S were HiFiMan's lowest resistance M-Planars at 22 ohms, specifically to be better with portable devices, and even they still sound better with a dedicated amp.

Other Cans:
AKG 553 - 32 Ohm, closed back and very good but not as spacious, pretty good without an amp
Philips SHP9500 - 32 Ohm, much cheaper ($59) but sound great for the price, don't lose much without an amp either
Grado SR225e - ? Ohm, sharper than all these, not my faves, bought after great SR-60 and IMO not worth the price. Can't win 'em all.

...and many other small and in-ears.

Judging by the headband, these look to be an older version of the newest iteration.

I'm trying to do some research now.

I'd use this mainly with my mini, and would look for a headphone amp down the line.

The price of these are the main attraction at the moment.

No, but you can feel them when you are wearing them.

But that wasn't my point.

The current version, which doesn't appear to have a version number, bare faint resemblance to what's shown here.

Trying to figure why the huge price delta, the different bands indicate a different version.

And when it's my money, my metrics matter.

Even with a wall-connected device like a computer with a good DAC (Apple supplies decent DACs in their Macs), headphones seem to sound better than connected to a portable. Since you'll be connecting to a Mini, these should sound quite good.

As another point of reference, there are people who love Sennheiser sound so much that they listen with their Senn 600s connected directly to their cellphones, 600 Ohms and all. Don't get much volume out of them with those specs but they love the sound. So 50 Ohms is notably better than that.

And that headband can make all the difference. I happen to like the other band you'll usually see on HiFiMan headphones, which IMO is comical looking, but it's pretty comfortable for at least 2 hours of listening. I'd love for it to be a bit lighter though and have more range of adjustment on the small side for pinheaded people like me. But I have that complaint with all headphones

Different HiFiMan bands are available, something similar if not the same as the one your referring to is only $40.

And yeah, 2hrs of listening time is the minimum, a must for me.

I'm not a fan of the chrome bits on the cans, and the current version has some kind of wood-looking element in it's place, and looks much nicer.

My collection includes some Beyer 770s, Senns 580s, and some model of mid-range AKGs, and none of them really thrill me.

There could possibly be a headphone amp down the line, but these look like they may be my first step.

I picked a bad week to give up spending.

Can confirm. I have these, too, and they sound great with my FiiO X5 DAP -- which, as good fortune would have it, has an amp section powerful enough to drive them properly. In fact, I purchase both items specifically to use together.

It is what it is.

My old Grado SR60's were helped quite a bit with a USB DAC-amp using either a Mac or iPhone as source.

Can't imagine more revealing cans wouldn't benefit even more. The Audioquest Dragonflies are good (3 models), the Helm BOLT dac gets good press, etc.

I don't think the Dragonflies have enough "OOMPH" to drive the HiFiMan cans.

Ok, so I'll consider pulling the trigger on these HiFiMan cans.

Thank you all for your input.

I won't argue since something bus-powered is only going to gain so much. It would make it even more imperative to have a robust front end in that case.

I have no personal experience with them but they are highly regarded by many reviewers. They helped put HiFi Man on the map in terms of affordable headphones (lots of other HFM models are much more expensive).

I pulled the trigger on the HE-560 V4s.

The few reviews I've read found them to sound noticeably better than the 400es and $100 isn't that much.

Interestingly, if I search Adorama for the HE-560 V4 directly, they're $349, but using the SD link, they're $229.

The current version, whatever V that is, is $899, and that's a bit rich.

For that kind of money, I'd probably look at different cans anyway.

So down the line, there will be another headband, and maybe an amp if I want to use these with my 'Phone.

Maybe.

My mini has an Audioengine D1 DAC but no external amp as none of my current headphones need one.

I'm looking forward to entering the world of magnetic planar audio.

Last January, I bought a pair of the HiFiMan HE400i headphones for $169.

I then paired it up with the $99 Magni 3+ headphone amp.

It works great. This amp easily drives any headphones.

Dang, and HiFiman doesn't even charge sale tax.

After a bit of research tonite I bought the HE400se just now, for $129 all-in and PayPal's offer to spread out 4 payments interest-free. PayPal also offered a $20 discount for a line of credit --- and I was tempted --- but decided $20 wasn't worth my time for having to watch it and cancel the account afterwards.

Gonna have some fun now, with a new amp of some kind and maybe balanced cables.
