Daughter works from home. Had a brief 5 minute power outage while giving presentation to a group online. Uses Comcast for internet.

Is considering a UPS to help keep her online. I have no experience with them.

Recommendations and advice would be appreciated.

Budget $100.00 or less.

when I get a power outage, I shut everything down except the comcast router so I can use my laptop with internet.

$100 is a bit limiting if you are wanting to keep a desktop and internet running for 5 minutes with confidence. For just keeping the router alive, a budget UPS should do the trick - well under $100.

What kind of computer does she have? If its a laptop then its really just her cable modem and router that need to be on the power backup.

You can't get a responsible recommendation for a UPS without providing a list of gear that she expects to keep running during a power outage, and for how long.

I've got a small, inexpensive UPS, and in the event of a failure, it gives me just enough time to gracefully shut down.

It won't even keep a modem and router alive for 15min.

You can't be certain how long an outage will last.

Maybe if she's using a laptop only, or a laptop with a small screen $100 might buy 5-10min.

It will also have to power the modem and router.

I have no idea how to calculate what size UPS she'll need for what gear she has, but at your price point, assume she'll have just enough time to say good-bye and shut down.

Anything more would be a plus.

Once she has a UPS set up and charged, she should probably give it a sea trial by doing a test conference and pull the plug on the UPS.

Then watch the clock.

I think I got 4 hours of backup out of a 1350va but I have a much larger setup - cable modem, router, 3x wifi endpoints, a small server, 24 port switch.

She would just keep the cable modem up. Laptop would run off its battery but depending on long the battery last she might use the UPS. The cable modem is her router. No other devices would be connected.

Shouldn't need to spend more than $50 - any minimal UPS should keep the comcast router going for 30min+.

I like Cyberpower. Too many issues with APC to recommend them.
