Quick FU to FOMO -- new mini setup.

Only been running since the middle of last afternoon... and its gonna be a bust. =(

finder seems zippier, web browsing is faster, but that's it.

Monterey seems like its for kids. hate the transparency and gray. Made adjustments in accsibilty, not much better. Why do I need the name of the folder on the top left permanently?

3 screens work, but when put to sleep the windows all jump all to one screen. prefs open in right screen in mail, but its on left screen

biggest issue just seems to be with my workflow. Firefox with a few windows (I usually have multiple with 50 tabs each), acrobat with one file, apple mail and a single 100 page 40 MB Indesign file (usually have 10+) and Im hitting swap. Copy/paste in ID seems to beachball. It was sometimes slow on my iMac, but never a beachball.

Prob gonna switch back... just did a few more things to make sure it wasn't just me... and its not. beachballs in ID, still no exchange, etc. Guess when I go to a big new iMac I will have to deal with Monterey, but for now Catalina is better

Cant get exchange email to work, wants some giant server address

And then there is this... =)

Yep, started all from scratch, no migration. I thought maybe I had done something liked that too... but nope. Maybe indexing or some other buggaboo was hampering it, but already moved everything back. Just left the cords in place and swapped my iMac back in. Like coming home. =)

how does the RAM area of the Activity monitor look when it's running that full load? Looking like 16gb is not enough, eh?

physical ram was 14-15 GB, swap jumped to 2-3 GB.

It really didn't seem right to me. Im 100% sure I installed the right ID, it asked, but maybe now Im second guessing myself. Cant check, its not plugged in anymore.

Monterey is awful. Looking a nice black text in Catalina.

In my world, this is a perfect finder window, no way I can see how to get the same in Monty:

First time I’ve heard of someone going back to Intel because of speed issues!

can't see your screen caps, FYI.

I made the move to an M1 mini almost a year ago now. I'm still on Big Sur. I don't really use Adobe stuff, so I can't speak to that. But I do get the issue with some windows going haywire upon wake from sleep. Otherwise, once all my software got updated for M1/Big Sur, the gains in speed and productivity have been significant. No way I'd want to go back to Intel at this point. I do agree that it would be nice if Apple would focus more on making the OS more usable, fixing bugs, and worry less about unifying MacOS and iOS with crap UX.

Got my wife setup on another M1 Mini a couple of weeks back. Went ahead with Monterey on that, to minimize the number of upgrades we'll do in the future. She was having an issue with her Logitech wireless mouse that is apparently not unique among other Monterey users. Otherwise, no complaints (yet), but her needs are pretty pedestrian (not a work machine for her. just internet stuff, email, documents, etc).

Yeah, maybe its just me expecting too much. Wife and kids have M1s, they have no problem and great for their use. Surfing is sweet...fast. although my youngest has complained about slowdowns when she has a bunch of game tabs open...

I have a busy week, might take another look this weekend.

Can you let the indexing rerun over night?
Let it finish up and run any other backups…

it ran overnight. Kind of hard to believe indexing could be the cause. No backups running.

Is Indesign M1 native or running under Rosetta?

As for hating Monterey, you will have the same problem when you eventually upgrade (to an M1 iMac or whatever).

How much of the slowdown is from Firefox? If FF is a factor, could you have bookmarks that you go to when needed and cut down the number of open tabs from the 150 you have now to maybe a couple dozen?

Monterey has a known problem with memory leaks that, TTBOMK, has not yet been resolved. It is the primary reason I have not yet upgraded my M1 mini from Big Sur. Maybe this is at least partially blame for your excessive RAM usage. Any chance you are able to install Big Sur on that baby?

1000% agree with you regarding the Monterey/Big Sur GUI - it SUCKS. My biggest regret with this kit is that I can't install Mojave on it.

It is what it is.

Native, full new installs. yeah, I hear you on having to accept Monty. Maybe some sort of finder replacement like pathfinder or the like is in my future.

Ive got a ton of bookmarks, and folders of bookmarks, but it just ends up the same way. I might be working on 5 clients social media multiple times a day. Checkins, updates, etc. Each one has a tab for IG, FB, Later and their home page. that's 20 tabs. Perform work on their CMS, one more. these are daily tasks.

Might do research on client leads, which could potentially lead to having another 20 tabs open for just one search.

MRF, gizmodo, SD, google news, creative market, local news, YT, my FB, my IG + handful of other daily sites = 20 more. =)

And lots more.... daily.

Edit: didn't know about Monty leaks. Came with BS, but just did the update since I was going all in.

I'm beginning to think that it really makes sense for people like jdc that earn with their computer work to get a system that works right for you then etch it in stone. Keep a lowpriced computer for common internet work and keep that old machine in a permanent unchanging state. Keep it off the internet...

We used to upgrade computers because the new ones were so much faster and faster was always better, but these days, most computers are 'fast enough' for most purposes.

Honestly, Monty really has me rethinking things. I mean we have all made the various 10.x transitions over the years, but this is pretty jarring.

Panther, then Snow Leo, Mavericks and El Cap -- all great, all a progression. Bug Sur changed it all.

I might start shopping for a full zoot 2020 iMac. It will run Catalina. They have fast internal flash drives, potential for 128 GB ram, and TBolt 3. M1s will be faster for sure, but if my day to day working is slower, then that just negates the bonus. Maybe an older iMac Pro...

Tab Groups in Safari is calling your name soo bad…
Indesignable is supposed to be 60% faster on M1.

Cant use Safari, but thanks. Tab groups don't seem any different than a single window with multiple tabs. I keep a folder in the bookmarks bar, then yawning smileypen all in tabs" and run with it.
Safari is missing a few critical extensions I use, including 1Passsword 6. (1 PW7 got "Monteryed")

Autofill is also works differently than FF, also critical to my use. I wish FF has some Safari and Chrome features...

Im gong to recheck my ID install, but still not seeing how that was the crux of everything.

This setup is way out of my league. My M1 Mini (8/256) is setup with a TB3 NVME
1TB startup (main) drive & a Kensington 5300T TB3 dock* w/ HDMI and two LG
displays. I have a StarTech USB 10G hub plugged in to the 5300T's spare TB3
port for externals. Mini came with Big Sur, it's staying on 11.6 until the issues get
worked out with 12.x.
*Previously used a Wavlink 10G hub w/ HDMI but its USB 10G ports were causing
kernel panics. 5300T seems to have cured that.
Sleep, etc. all working smoothly. Much more snappier than the old 12-core cMP.

Glad you love yours.

its really not that far off. Mine is 16/256 mini + 1 TB boot + 4 TB NVMe RAID 0. Using plugable display port/hub.

All the cables are bit much. 6 just for monitors. Power ports too. 10 total.

My extras are carry overs that would go away, a 6 TB RAID, small portable backup.

Not sure what's going on with ID.

I haven't yet seen it across a range of ARM Macs to figure out where the hang-ups might be. It seems much quicker to me in the limited experience I have with it on M1s.

(ID is notoriously a dog when it comes to speed on any platform. Maybe you need to see it side by side on Intel and ARM? If you're copy/pasting formatted text imported from MS Word, there's a bug I've seen on Intel that will cause ID to have a brief seizure each time. Maybe you've hit the same bug? If so then the fix is to bring the text in unformatted by using RTF or copy/paste using a plain-text TextEdit doc to clean up hidden formatting characters.)

...

In respect of Monterey's fugly interface, the same "enhancements" that I recommend for Big Sur apply to Monterey: Hit the Accessibility options and tweak the Display settings. Dark Mode is the only way to get consistently legible text, and adding the "differentiate without color" and "increase contrast" options brings out the edges of windows title bars and buttons. Keep a browser window open and drag the contrast slider around a bit until you can differentiate subtle colors easily. Then change the fugly desktop to almost anything other than the default and it's fairly tolerable.

Thanks for all the insight, yeah, I played with Monty accessibility settings, maybe I needed to play more.

I copy/paste files (PDFs) from within the document. Dont actually own Word. It was using 4+ GB of RAM in activity monitor.

AM seems broken on my imac, doesn't show columns. I never touch it, so don't really care. =)

But this is what it says. 6 ID files open, one 102 pages, rest small, under 10. Dont really expect this to be solved. It is what it is right now.

That seems very much like the memory-leak bug

Doesn't show the column-lines anymore, but has re-sizable/movable columns.

thanks, had to stretch the window across 2 screens to see the memory column. I rarely look at it.
