Who bought the Staten Island ferry? SNL's Pete Davidson and Colin Jost

This is a followup to a thread from the other day

“King of Staten Island” star Pete Davidson and fellow “Saturday Night Live” cast member Colin Jost bought a decommissioned Staten Island Ferry vessel, New York magazine reported.

The two funnymen teamed up with comedy club owner Paul Italia to put up the $280,100 winning bid, the report said. The group plans to turn the boat into an entertainment and event venue. They’re still working to find a permanent dock for their new boatertainment center.

But the comedic crew didn’t just buy any ferry, they bought the unparalleled John F. Kennedy Ferry. The last in a class of old school ships with wooden seats, the MV John F. Kennedy was beloved by riders for its ambiance and throwback vibes. It was taken out of service in August 2021.

Both Davidson and Jost grew up on Staten Island and often rode the ferry. The Kennedy was listed in “poor condition,” with the listing saying the vessel was “decommissioned due to mechanical issues.” It also came with “numerous spare parts which are obsolete and not needed.” The ferry was sold “As Is and Where Is.”

Davidson and Jost have not said how they plan to physically take possession of the boat, but the listing notes that buyers are allowed to call in a shipping company for help.

Well they both have plenty of disposable income to throw at it, whats a million or 2?

I think ScarJo got 40 mil from the House of Mouse in the BW settlement.

Even with Scarlet Johanssen’s financial backing, these guys have no idea what they're getting into. Old ships are money pits even if they were designed for entertainment in the first place, like the SS United States. Reconfiguring a huge old ferry in decrepit condition into something more amenable for operation in the NY metro area, even if it is just moored and never gets underway, and then operating it for events, will never come close to breaking even. Never. I give these guys two years.

Who knows, maybe it will keep them out of trouble. Everybody needs a hobby.

That is all true, but how "sea worthy" must it be to be tethered to a dock? Would it require full refurb to CG approval if it never moved? What are the dry dock possibilities?

The hull is listed in good condition. The hull has to have an out of the water inspection every 3 years per ColRegs 46.
