You cracked me up, that's exactly what I was thinking.

Well, the one in use since the '90s (80's?) would also not win beauty contests, would it?

I read something awhile back that said the new one should have things like working AC and brakes, not pollute like a gushing oil geyser, nor always sound like a continuous exhaust leak.

I'd call it progress?

I mean, it does look like a duck face.

It's one of those OHMYGAWD! things to a lot of people like to grouse about, that will be yesterday's news after a couple of weeks deployment.

While I'm not usually That Guy who likes to make near-baseless predictions about something bad coming of New Stuff, I suspect all that glass would/will be quite a target for vandals.

That glass affords great visibility, though it looks like an excessive amount of glass, and I want to see the wiper system for it.

The low front would add to parking visibility, and possibly maintenance ease.

Low or no nose/giant windshield is a common feature of modern buses, that also spend a lot of time negotiating curbs.

USPS mail delivery vehicle drive cycle is tailor-made for electric propulsion...only one shift of relatively limited average range compared to other delivery companies.

That thing is such a scam it’s mind boggling. Only 10% will be EV. It’s made by a defense contractor, who has contracts with the logistics company with deep ties to Louis DeJoy, the head of the USPS.

They can tie into the panels used by the sorting machines that were removed.

They have adequate power from the power companies on the pole next to the postal building, the one with the transformers, or ground mounted transformers in larger facilities. Otherwise, the power companies upgrade these for no customer charge. Installing uprated panels will cost in the tens of thousands. Then trenching/plowing in cable and installing outlets on posts, tens of thousands more.

The payback will be quick via lower fuel costs and lower maintenance costs. Also, less time spent filling a tank although that may be offset by the need to plug-in every night rather than gassing up once a week.

When the last design was implemented there was competition with a Diesel engine manufacturer (Onan, IIRC). The engine had to fit the standard truck as a drop-in. The problem with these was that carriers testing the models were complaining about the lack of cabin heat because the Diesel engine supplier had to use the existing heater core. The Diesel engine supplier offered to upgrade all heater cores but this wasn’t permitted so no Diesels.

My first apartment back in 1970 in suburban Minneapolis had a ring of 110v outlets around the perimeter of the parking lot. I suppose there were 80 to 100 outlets total per building. They were used to run engine tank heaters back when winters got cold. They were only switched on from 4am to 8am, IIRC, and they were popular. The lot had room for twice as many cars as there were outlets so competition could be fierce for an outlet. Fuel injection, ECUs and global warming made them mostly obsolete. Anyway, it can be done.

Oh yes, it can be done for any given post office location. But then it has to be repeated for thousands more locations.

I'd think they'd want to add 240VAC, Level 2 circuits.

Still, those aren't rocket science...I'm sure 50A circuits would do fine given they can all charge overnight.
