Since DinerDave raised the subject,..
I don’t think the subject has been raised here before.
I love horror films. DD’s post made me think of this movie I watched not long ago. Highly recommended.

The VVitch

Anyone care to share recommendations, opinions, etc?

I like intelligent horror with supernatural elements, but am not into much of the hack and slash stuff. I would recommend John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness. I also love Event Horizon. The comedy/horror film Horns with Daniel Radcliffe was also good.

I loved the Karloff Frankenstein movies. Yes, a bit dated but still cool.

I would have said Prince of Darkness too, but it pales in comparison with Carpenter's The Thing.

It kinda depends on from which perspective, you're talking horror?:

Body horror: The Fly (the 1986 version, though the 1958 version is worth a watch)

Existential horror: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978, though again the 1956 version is worth a watch)

Atmospheric horror: The Legend of Hell House (1973), The Haunting (1963)

Zombie horror: 28 Days Later (2002), lots of other good ones

Demonic possession: The Exorcist (1973), The Omen (1976)

Weird @ss children: Village of the Damned (1960, though the 1995 version isn't anywhere near as bad as people claim)

... etc.

Alien is an incredible film. Life is not on the same league, but is good nonetheless. Great acting.

Thanks Marc Anthony, I’ve put your whole list on cue.

I love Boris Karloff since I was a kid, Can’t remember if his movies where broadcasted often, or Elvira… Good stuff!!

Peter, your classification is great haha. I’ve seen all of them but the ones in Atmospheric Horror. I wonder if VVitch fits in there.
For weird @ss children I nominate The Devil’s Rejects.

Sam Raimi’s produced Crawl, and it’s lotsa fun. No evil, just alligators… and Evil Death is a personal classic.

Zombeavers goes to the list, haha… I know Teeth is great!

Older science fiction vampire space flick…Lifeforce. Came out in the 80’s. Directed by Tobe Hooper.

I guess I forgot a category:

Campy horror: there are just so many that could go in this category (the Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm St films for example), but the one that came to mind is this... freaked the heck out of me as a child: [en.wikipedia.org]

Also, don't forget about the more recent offerings, e.g., [en.wikipedia.org]

A personal favorite for a couple of reasons...

...and, oh yeah, pre-ST:TNG Patrick Stewart also appears in this.

Get out is good. Queen of Blood, to the list.
Nightmare on Elm Street is a great film, the rest of the series is not my cuppa…
Young Frankenstein!! To the list!…
The Invisible Man is supposed to be good, the newest with Elizabeth Moss… on my list too.

PeterB,

The original A Nightmare on Elm Street wads definitely not campy horror. The rest of the series became campy over time. The first, though, not campy at all. Just like the original Night of the Living Dead and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre weren't campy. Take into consideration the stage of filmmaking at the time of their release and it puts them into entirely different classes/stages of horror films.
